Celebrate the annual return of Bhutan's endangered Black-necked Cranes

On the Wings of Prayer: The annual return of Bhutan's rare Black-necked Cranes

December 01 ~ 12, 2020 (Prime Black-necked Crane viewing season)

See Bhutan's rare and elegant Black-necked Cranes and learn about the ancient yet fragile ties that exist between the people of Phobjikha valley, the endangered cranes and the natural world. On this journey named for a documentary film that first brought wider attention to Bhutan's Black-necked Cranes, we also consider  the mythic stories of Vajrayana Buddhism whose influences shape life and culture in the Himalayas to this day.

  •  Sacred Black-necked Cranes

  • Beautiful Bumthang valley

  • High-end traditionally authentic lodges & resorts

  • Day hikes to temples and attractions

  • Learn about Himalayan art and culture

  • Hike to the magnificent "Tiger's Nest"

  • Trip Extensions Available on Request

Take a short but dramatic mountain flight past a tableau of revered peaks in the Bhutan Himalaya, from the breathtaking valleys of Paro and Thimphu to the serene Bumthang valley.

Hike and explore the scenic valleys at the heart of Bhutanese cultural life, visit a string of ancient and moving temples and monasteries before turning west. In Phobjikha, see Bhutan's rare and endangered Black-necked Cranes back on their winter roosting grounds after their arduous annual migration from beyond the Tibetan Plateau (read The Black-necked Cranes of Bhutan). Enter the secluded and picturesque Gangtey Monastery, festive for this time of year.

This is a contemplative journey with time to take in some of Bhutan 's most popular monastery-fortresses or dzongs , and also to savor the peaceful heart of Bhutan.

Route Map - Celebrating Bhutan's Black-necked Cranes

There are so many things that we recall each day that remind us how special this trip was for both of us. It was about seeing, feeling and understanding the spirit of the place, and perhaps it was partly about finding answers to some very personal questions. You shared your country with respect, humor, grace, patience, and with great care. We both carry extraordinary memories of an extraordinary trip!
