While we strive to keep the actual running of the trips as close to our original description as possible we cannot rule out changes or modifications and, or, variations on the ground as a result of factors that may be beyond our control. If such circumstances occur, we always strive to do better, or at minimum match the trip described but this may not always be possible. AIRFARE COSTS Please note that while we make every endeavor to accurately price our trips, airfares subject to change by the airline are outside our control . As a result, charter flight costs if included the trip trip may change and we may be forced to generate a final additional invoice to make up any such potential differences in cost. Guests will be notified of any such changes well before trip departure. Your journey begins with the dramatic morning flight to Paro from Bangkok, past glittering Himalayan peaks. Next, visit the ancient capital of Punakha to enjoy the unique food traditions of the valley. Stay at a friendly farm lodge surrounded by fruit orchards and an organic garden overlooking the massive Punakha Dzong. ABOUT CULTURAL EXPEDITIONS Our cultural expeditions are bespoke itineraries designed for active travelers that combine guided excursions, cultural insights, art and customs, with distinguished accommodations featuring a traditional ambience. Our journeys are small group adventures of usually 8 to 12 travelers, with a maximum of 16 guests per group. Unlike most tour providers who think nothing of a single guide leading an entire busload of travelers, we maintain a maximum of 4 guests per Bhutan Himalaya Expeditions guide, not counting support staff. This ensures that our journeys feel more like a shared adventure with local friends than a tourist's jaunt through the countryside. GETTING THERE Fly from your home city to Bangkok, Singapore, New Delhi Kolkata, or Kathmandu (Main Gateway Cities)* Overnight Fly from Gateway City to Paro, Bhutan. IMPORTANT: Bhutan Himalaya Expeditions makes round-trip flight arrangements from the Gateway City of your choice to Bhutan as a courtesy to our travelers. Airfare is not included in trip price. For further details please email us contact us using the Reserve Online button on this page. *Bangkok is the primary Gateway City and offers the most frequent and most reliable flights to Bhutan. OUR TRAVEL EXTENSIONS (with optional Bangkok Transit arrangements) If you're thinking of traveling to some of the other interesting destinations in the region before or after Bhutan you may like to consider our travel extensions. That way you can spend less time juggling and coordinating multiple bookings and more time experiencing the magnificent World Heritage site of Angkor Wat, a peaceful Laotian sojourn, discovering Vietnam or experiencing India. For further details, and to see past travel extensions, please visit our Regional Extensions page. WHAT TRAVELERS ARE SAYING “Through the eyes of a select few informed leaders, we saw the dilemmas of a culture: A hitherto sheltered nation discovering the arguments for and against remaining a cloistered society in this 21st Century. I loved the adventure, and I loved the discovery. We then travel to Mongar and remote Lhuentse district to experience the warm hospitality of a renowned local weaver in Khoma, a region celebrated for its legendary textile heritage. Next, a visit to the ancestral home of the royal family in Dungkhar provides a rich subtext to the Wangduechhoeling Palace Consecration. Finally, a tour of Sherubtse College, an institution that has shaped the nation's leaders and civil servants, followed by a review of impactful agriculture and community enrichment projects in Trashigang before a dramatic flight back west to conclude your journey with a few days of rest, relaxation, and cultural immersion in the capital before returning home. This moderate hike takes about 1.5-2 hours hours with some steep sections, and offers panoramic views of Thimphu city and the surrounding mountains, ending at the spectacular bronze Buddha Dordenma, which is taller than the famous Christ the Redeemer stature in Rio de Janeiro. If time permits, other interesting visits around the capital include a tour of the Royal Textile Academy; Tashichhoe Dzong, the stunning fortress and monastery that serves as the seat of the Buddhist monastics and the king’s throne room; the National Memorial Chorten, a prominent landmark in Thimphu, where locals gather to pray and meditate; the Motithang Takin Preserve (The odd-looking Takin is the national animal of Bhutan). Continuing the descent, you reach Lingmethang, near Kuri Zampa, the lowest point on the route at 570 meters (1,871 feet). The final leg of the journey takes you through verdant forests and winding roads until you arrive in Mongar, perched on a hill, a bustling regional center of eastern Bhutan. The roads today are steep and winding, so maintain a relaxed attitude, and embrace a healthy dose of adventuresomeness to fully appreciate this unique driving experience in Bhutan. Arriving in Lhuentse, we visit the Lhuentse Dzong, a significant historical and cultural site. We continue from Lhuentse to Khoma, one of Bhutan’s most storied textile weaving villages. Checking in at the Chimme Yuden Homestay, expect a warm welcome from the matriarch of the house, Aum Chimme, and settle into the rural accommodations of a typical village home. WHAT TRAVELERS ARE SAYING “Karma and his team perfectly orchestrated a wonderful series of valuable insights into Bhutan and Bhutanese culture. My particular area of interest was to learn about Bhutan’s challenge of balancing the goals of their Gross National Happiness Policy with the need to grow their economy and promote industry in the kingdom, which Karma addressed by arranging fascinating meetings with Bhutan’s Economic Affairs Ministers and other Bhutanese dignitaries and media personalities. A fantastic trip all-around with great hiking, culture, current affairs, insights into Buddhism and everything in-between.” ~ Heinrich Karl Friedrich Eduard Pierer von Esch, ex CEO, Siemens AG-Germany (front, third from left) See all posts > ACCOMMODATIONS Local Heritage Lodges & Homestay GROUP SIZE Private DURATION 16 days ACTIVITY LEVEL Easy to Moderate RESERVE TRIP Or call 1-855-4-BHUTAN (248826) TRIP TYPE ACTIVE ● CULTURE ASK A QUESTION EXPLORE OUR STUNNING LANDSCAPE WITH BHUTAN HIMALAYA EXPEDITIONS Sign up to receive travel updates and offers, tips & insights from Bhutan Himalaya Expeditions Thanks for subscribing! After pick-up at the airport we drive you to your hotel, the Le Meridien Paro Riverfront, just a few minutes down the road. Meals included: Lunch, Dinner Accommodations: The Le Meridien Paro Riverfront OCTOBER 27: EXPLORE THIMPHU Today we take the short (25-minute) flight to Bumthang, in central Bhutan, and check in at the Mountain Resort across the road from Wangduechhoeling Palace. Our domestic chartered flight from Paro lands at Jakar Airport late morning. After pickup, we make the short drive to the lodge, followed by welcome refreshments and lunch. Later, we take a short drive up the valley past imposing Jakar Dzong to hike a central section of the new Trans Bhutan Trail from Lamai Goempa, built in the 1800s as a palace for the first king, now home to the Ugyen Wangchuck Institute for Conservation and Environment Research (UWICER), a Bhutan Foundation project site that supports environmental education, ecological studies and forestry conservation services in Bhutan. OCTOBER 28: ARRIVAL IN BUMTHANG/ PILGRIM’S ROUTE Palace Event: The Bhutan Foundation-supported palace renovation for adaptive use is formally unveiled today. Its dynamic new incarnation is a museum that's more than just a repository of unique and rarely-seen historical artifacts, manuscripts, and religious objects. It stands as a cultural and historical institution that intersects with the present and sends its visitors— Bhutanese and international—on a journey of inquiry and exploration into the origins of Bhutan and the modern Bhutanese state. Attended by the members of the royal family and Bhutanese dignitaries, today's fitting ceremony launches it into its new role as an exciting place to learn about the rich narratives drawn from the annals of Bhutanese history. A sneak peak of the exhibitions and programs of the Palace will be presented at this event along with the traditional ceremony of installing the Gyaltshen of the Palace. Future visitors to the museum will also enjoy audio- visual galleries and exhibits that bring the palace's unique history to life, and children and youth will be able to participate in hands-on activities that educate, inform, and stoke their learning. OCTOBER 29: SIGHTSEEING IN BUMTHANG Touring options today include a visit to the Jakar Dzong, also known as the "Castle of the White Bird," which offers panoramic views of the surrounding Chokhor Valley; and the Bhutan Foundation-supported herbal tea farm with a stroll through the charming two-lane Jakar town, ending at the Red Panda cafe for homemade stroopwafel, Swiss cheese and other local treats. For a more challenging option, take a steep climb on foot up a forested trail connecting Jakar and Tang valleys with a visit to the local nunnery or, alternately, a drive up the valley with a stop at the Tang Central School, which was the site of a Bhutan Foundation-supported Special Education Needs (SEN) program, before a visit to the historic Ogyenchholing Museum. Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner Accommodations: The Mountain Resort, Jakar OCTOBER 30: PALACE CONSECRATION CEREMONY Her Majesty the Queen is expected to officiate at the full-day Palace Consecration Ceremony with other royal family members attending, and dignitaries representing senior government leadership and the senior monastic leaders of Bhutan. Also attending the historic ceremony will be a small hand-selected group of Bhutan Foundation donors, invitees, and well-wishers. Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner Accommodations: The Mountain Resort, Jakar OCTOBER 31: BHUTAN FOUNDATION PROJECT VISITS Start this morning at UWICER (Ugyen Wangchuck Institute for Conservation and Environmental Research), where we learn about Bhutan's conservation efforts and environmental research. Enjoy a lovely dinner of regional culinary specialities and spend a relaxing evening at the lodge, reflecting on the day's experiences. Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner Accommodations: The Mountain Resort, Jakar NOVEMBER 01: JAKAR TO MONGAR The drive from Bumthang to Mongar passes through several ecological zones characterized by diverse landscapes: high mountain passes, dense forests, and deep valleys. The route offers panoramic views of the Eastern Himalayas, alpine meadows and temperate broadleaf forests. Waterfalls cascade down to the road in places along the highway providing dramatic backdrops while scenic traditional Bhutanese villages with rice-terraces nearing harvest add to the vistas. From Bumthang, the highway climbs up to the Thrumshingla Pass at an elevation of 3,780 meters (12,402 feet), the highest point on our journey, and the second-highest motorable pass in Bhutan. Descending from Thrumshingla, the road winds through the Sengor, known as one of Asia’s global birdwatching hotspots and famous for its lush vegetation. If you tend to get carsick on winding mountain roads, be sure to bring along OTC anti-nausea medication or wristbands, which can be purchased online. Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner Accommodations: Wangchuk Hotel, M ongar NOVEMBER 02: MONGAR TO LHUENTSE The drive from Mongar to Lhuentse is a captivating journey through the country's northeastern region, covering a distance of approximately 77 kilometers and taking around three hours. The drive is characterized by spectacular scenery, featuring stark cliffs that tower above river gorges and dense coniferous forests. The road winds through the rugged terrain, offering breathtaking views of the natural beauty that defines this rugged part of Bhutan. While the accommodations are sparse, the experience provides insights into the beauty of rural Kurtoep life that will be well worth the effort! Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner Accommodations: A um Chime Yuden Homestay, Khoma NOVEMBER 03: EXPLORE KHOMA VILLAGE This morning we explore Khoma’s rich and long heritage as weavers to the royal houses of Bhutan, starting with our host Aum Chimme’s own weaving home and collection. We gain insights into the techniques of local artisans whose handwoven textiles are legendary all over Bhutan, especially the intricate silk Kushuthara , a treasured and iconic style of the Bhutanese textile weaving method. Meet reputed local weavers as well as young upcoming talent among the weavers in this fascinating village that continues to sustain and breathe new life into the unique home-based weaving culture of Bhutan. Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner Accommodations: A um Chime Yuden Homestay, Khoma NOVEMBER 04: KHOMA TO DUNGKHAR / RETURN TO MONGAR The drive from Khoma to Dungkhar is approximately 40 kilometers and takes about 2 hours due to the rough, dirt-road conditions. Upon arrival, visit Dungkar Naktshang, one of the ancestral homes of the Wangchuck Dynasty. This site offers a glimpse into Bhutan's royal heritage and houses many sacred relics and treasures discovered by renowned figures such as Terton Pema Lingpa as well as rare pieces of writing and letters penned by the ancestors of the Bhutanese royal family. Take an exploratory stroll through Dungkhar, nestled amid scenic mountains. The village provides a serene showcase of Bhutan's rural lifestyle and natural beauty. In the late afternoon, return to Mongar, allowing time to enjoy the picturesque landscapes along the way. Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner Accommodations: W angchuk Hotel, Mongar NOVEMBER 05: MONGAR TO TRASHIGANG / LINGKHAR LODGE Today's 3-4 hour drive from Mongar to Lingkhar Lodge in Trashigang begins with an ascent from Mongar, passing through terraced fields on both sides of the highway, to Kilikhar, home to a Buddhist college. The road then winds through forests of blue pine and rhododendron, offering stunning views of the surrounding mountains. At an elevation of 2,400 meters (7,874 feet), Kori La Pass, adorned with mani walls and prayer flags, provides a serene stop along the way. The pass marks a transition from coniferous to broadleaf forests as the highway descends through picturesque villages surrounded by maize and mustard fields. The road then follows the steep valleys carved by the Sherichhu and the Drangme Chhu Rivers, offering glimpses of traditional Bhutanese rural life. This is a picturesque journey through the easternmost part of Bhutan. Near the journey's end, Chazam, known for its historic iron bridge, serves as a junction for roads leading to other parts of eastern Bhutan. From here, the road climbs up to Trashigang. Our home this evening is the Lingkhar Lodge, nestled on the side of a hill, overlooking terraced fields and surrounded by fruit trees. Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner Accommodations: L ingkhar Lodge, Trashigang NOVEMBER 06: VISIT TRASHIGANG PROJECT SITES / LINGKHAR LODGE Today, we have a day trip from Lingkhar Lodge to Sherubtse College, Draktsho School, and the Trashigang Agricultural Projects supported by the Bhutan Foundation's Small Grants Program. Start your day early at Lingkhar Lodge with a drive up the winding mountain road to Sherubtse College, located in Kanglung. This institution plays a crucial role in promoting inclusivity and empowerment through skill development and education. In the afternoon, we visit local agricultural projects supported by the Bhutan Foundation's Small Grants Program. These projects focus on sustainable agricultural practices, soil revitalization, and community development. The Small Grants Program supports initiatives with a focus on Gross National Happiness (GNH), aiming to enhance local livelihoods and environmental sustainability. At the end of the day, return to Lingkhar Lodge to rest and enjoy the quiet views before dinner. Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner Accommodations: L ingkhar Lodge, Trashigang On October 26th, fly from Bangkok to Paro and take a scenic drive to Thimphu. Attend the historic palace consecration ceremony on October 30th, and discover local culture and hiking trails around lovely Jakar valley. Journey east to Mongar, Lhuentse Dzong, and the renowned weaving village of Khoma. Conclude your travels east in Trashigang, visiting educational and agricultural initiatives. Fly back to Paro, hike iconic Tiger's Nest monastery, then drive to Thimphu for final explorations and social events. EXPEDITION STAFF Every expedition is curated by expert native-born guides and trip leaders who also facilitate meetings and learning experiences with other locally knowledgeable people along the way. Our experienced team shares valuable insights and local expertise to ensure a culturally rich adventure of discovery through the Himalayan landscape and traditions of Bhutan. For further details please email us contact us using the Reserve Online button on this page. *Bangkok and Delhi are the primary Gateway Cities and offer the most frequent and most reliable flights to Bhutan. OUR TRAVEL EXTENSIONS (with optional Bangkok Transit arrangements) If you're thinking of traveling to some of the other interesting destinations in the region before or after Bhutan you may like to consider our travel extensions. A fantastic trip all-around with great hiking, culture, current affairs, insights into Buddhism and everything in-between.” ~ Heinrich Karl Friedrich Eduard Pierer von Esch, ex CEO, Siemens AG-Germany (front, third from left) See all posts > EXPLORE OUR STUNNING LANDSCAPE WITH BHUTAN HIMALAYA EXPEDITIONS Sign up to receive travel updates and offers, tips & insights from Bhutan Himalaya Expeditions Thanks for subscribing!
