HOME TALE LAYA
A boutique home in the heart of Laya
Home Tale Laya is a small, family-run lodge located in Nyelu, one of the clustered homes that make up Laya village in Bhutan’s Gasa district, at roughly 3,800 meters (12,490 feet) above sea level. The property is a boutique alternative to traditional farmhouse homestays, with attached bathrooms and showers, offering structured accommodation in a village that previously had very limited, basic lodging for visitors.
Location and access
The lodge sits within walking distance of the main part of Laya. From the property, guests look onto typical Layap stone houses, surrounding yak pastures, and high-altitude ridges that form part of Bhutan’s northern Himalayan chain. Temperatures can be cold in Laya late fall through winter, and its altitude makes acclimatization and fitness key considerations for travelers.
Buildings and rooms
Home Tale Laya is built from local stone and timber in a style consistent with village architecture, with a main house and a small number of guest rooms classified as “traditional style” and “elegant and modern.” The lodge has only four guest units, making it one of the smallest commercial properties in the region and positioning it as an upscale homestay rather than a hotel. Rooms include wide king size beds with standard mattresses, private bathrooms depending on configuration, and views over the village and the surrounding hills.
Services and facilities
Meals at the lodge are prepared using local products sourced from the village and nearby Gasa and Punakha. Communal areas include a dining room and sitting space where guests can gather, eat, and interact with members of the host family.
Activities and community links
Home Tale Laya positions itself as a base for cultural and nature-based experiences rather than a full‑service resort. Through the host family and local partners, guests can join village walks, short hikes to surrounding viewpoints, basic cooking activities, and informal visits with Layap households. These activities are designed to show daily life in Laya, including livestock herding, household routines, and participation in local festivals such as the Royal Highland Festival held nearby each October.
Target guests and considerations
Home Tale Laya is primarily geared toward small trekking groups who intend to visit Laya as part of a high‑altitude itinerary. It offers more structure and comfort than standard farmhouse overnights or expedition camping typical of visits to Laya. While the services and amenities do not match the levels of Bhutan’s luxury hotels in lower valleys, the lodge fees are rated at premium levels because of the remote location and lack of comparitive facilities.
