THE PEMAKO, THIMPHU

The Pemako, Thimphu: Saffron fortress in the city

Part of the two-resort luxury hotel named after the legendary hidden land of Pemako, and owned entirely by Bhutanese developers, the Pemako Thimphu is built to look like a massive Bhutanese Dzong or fortress. The five-story 5-star luxury hotel in the center of Bhutan’s capital, Thimphu, has 66 rooms—the largest such resort in its class—overlooking the bustling city.

The floor plans of the rooms start upwards of 450 square feet for the base deluxe standard, a generous spread compared to most other hotel. The massive saffron walls—where it diverges from the white-washed exteriors of traditional Bhutanese fortresses—is Pemako's signature trademark, recognizable from all points in the city. Colorful hand-painted dragons climb up the walls alongside Buddhism’s eight primary symbols, the Tashi Dhargye. Each suite features the work of well-known local artists, dark chocolate-colored wood floors, and lavishly carved wooden furniture.

Standard with each room are heated bathroom floors for that added touch of luxury, and cushioned daybeds from which to enjoy the considerable mountain views. Early birds may be greeted by the sights and sounds of monks chanting in the courtyard. Evenings are made festive by traditional folk and mask dancers who may have a scheduled performance around the obligatory if cozy sunken fire pit. The restaurant’s homage to traditional Bhutanese cuisine involves favorites like a milk-like salted river-weed soup and “ema datshi,” the fiery national dish infused with chilies and cheese. With its high-rising carved walls, the tea lounge serves a traditional Himalayan butter tea that unfamiliar palates would be well advised to enjoy as a hearty broth instead of tea. The swimming pool is a favorite with local Bhutanese elites, and the Jiva Spa underneath offers rejuvenation to those so inclined.

🏰 $$$: Luxury accommodations from $1020 (including taxes) per person per night (2024) with $60 additional during festival dates.
