REQUEST ITINERARY ITINERARY Beginning with a steep ascent through a lush landscape of oak and deciduous trees that display their vibrant colors best in late fall, this trek is among the most rewarding ones in western Bhutan because of its lightly traveled trails. According to local belief the sacred Tshonapata lake in the western Ha Valley holds within its depths many holy relics and treasures that predestined awakened beings can see and, subsequently, reveal to the world for the benefit of all beings. Such a master was the Terton or “Treasure Revealer” Sherab Mebar who extracted a magic cymbal from its depths that's still used to make sacred music on the first day of the high holy days of the traditional Buddhist calendar. This beautiful Himalayan ridge-line trek celebrates the outstanding Bhutanese tradition of cleansing the spirit by trekking to revered lakes and holy mountains. In the secluded Haa Valley, we visit remote hillside shrines and traditional stone homes, discovering a way of life untouched by time. From there, we travel to the lush Punakha Valley, its fertile rice terraces nourished by the Pho and Mo rivers. Within the breathtaking Punakha Dzong—one of Bhutan’s finest architectural treasures—we take part in a special blessing before continuing north to Gasa and onward to the remote highland village of Laya. Here, among the high peaks and ridges that rise to the sky, the Royal Highland Festival bursts into color: yak herders in embroidered robes parade their animals, archers test their skill, and masked dances echo across alpine meadows glowing with autumn light. The journey then arcs east into Bumthang, Bhutan’s spiritual heartland. We wander through valleys dotted with whitewashed temples, explore the historic Wangduechhoeling Palace—hailed by Time magazine as one of the “World’s Greatest Places”—and stroll through Jakar’s quiet streets. Gentle hikes lead to ancient monasteries nestled in whispering forests, where Bhutanese tradition and a rare sense of serenity linger. A final flight returns us to Paro for the iconic hike to Tiger’s Nest Monastery, perched high on its cliffside, closing this journey of cultural immersion, spiritual connection, and timeless Himalayan beauty. HEALTH & SAFETY HEALTH & SAFETY We are following strict national and international safety guidelines and protocols (Royal Government of Bhutan, WHO, and CDC (US) recommendations) to keep you, our staff, and the Bhutanese people safe. This includes new measures for maintaining personal health and hygiene, social distancing best practices, face covering requirements, cleaning, handwashing and more. UPDATED BOOKING & CANCELLATION POLICY With global travel resuming, we have changed our booking and cancellation policies back to normal. Normal cancellation policies are now in effect and final trip payment is due (4 months/120 days before trip start date, whichever is earlier). Trip cancellation policies are outlined in our trip confirmation emails and available by request. Return to Paro for the iconic hike to Tiger’s Nest Monastery , a dramatic finale to this unforgettable Himalayan journey. VIEW DAY BY DAY OCTOBER 14: ARRIVAL IN PARO FROM BANGKOK Touch down in Paro, the emerald gateway to Bhutan, on a spectacular flight threading Himalayan peaks. This first day offers gentle acclimatization with easy touring: stroll Paro town’s markets, admire the National Museum at Ta Dzong, and rest in preparation for the journey ahead. Overnight in Paro. Meals included: Lunch, Dinner Accommodations: Nemjo Heritage Lodge , Tiger's Nest Camp or the Olathang Lodge OCTOBER 15–16: TREKKING OR DRIVING INTO HAA VALLEY Set out on the Trans Bhutan Trail, following centuries-old footpaths once used by farmers and local nobility. The full-day trek climbs steeply from Paro through evergreen forests to the high ridge of Kaley La, from where deep forests open onto vast views, before descending into the pristine Haa Valley. Guests preferring a gentler pace may drive and enjoy a guided village walk. We stay at the Soednam Zingkha Lodge, a traditional lodge housed in the old home of the former governor, the “Haabi Penlop.” In the evening, cross a small wooden bridge across a rushing stream to the opposite side of the lodge to soak in traditional style in wooden tubs. Fiery cups of local rice Ara, a hot alcoholic drink will be served to heighten the experience. Afterwards, enjoy Hoentey , a rich and heavy dumpling made from buckwheat and dried and preserved vegetables. On the second day in Haa, we walk through timeless Haatoe Village and attend an ancient shamanic prayer to the valley's suspernatural guardian before completing the scenic Haa panorama loop that takes us to remote and beautiful temples and villages. We take a well-deserved soak in the lodge's hot stone baths in the evening. Meals included: Lunch, Dinner Accommodations: The Soednam Zingkha Heritage Home or comparable OCTOBER 17: HAA TO PUNAKHA VIA MENDEYGANG HERITAGE HOMESTAY Drive eastward through landscapes that tumble from alpine passes to subtropical valleys. Arrive at the Mendeygang Heritage Homestay, a traditional farmhouse turned retreat (the ancestral home of a former Bhutanese Prime Minister) where warm Bhutanese hospitality reveals the rhythms of rural life. The Mendegang Heritage Home is a restored ancestral farmhouse overlooking the terraces of Thinleygang, just before the Punakha Valley. After the long drive, settle into the heritage home’s hospitality. Relax in the garden courtyard, or take a short stroll into the village, followed by dinner, which is served in the timbered hall—simple, hearty fare from the family’s own fields, shared with stories of the house’s long history. Meals: all meals included Lodge: Mendegang Heritage (Punakha) OCTOBER 18: EXPLORE PUNAKHA VALLEY In one of Bhutan’s most fertile and storied valleys, walk among rice paddies and riverside villages. Visit Punakha Dzong, a jewel of Himalayan architecture, glowing white against emerald fields at the confluence of the Pho Chhu and Mo Chhu rivers. Cross the country’s longest suspension bridge swaying above turquoise waters. We visit our old friend, the national award-winning artist, Asha Kama Wangdi, at his open village studio. If there's time, we take a hike to the lake above his village. Overnight in the exquisite Dhumra Farm Cottages, overlooking the valley. Meals: all meals included Lodge: The Dhumra Farm Cottages or the Zhingkham Lodge OCTOBER 19: HEALING SPRINGS OF GASA Climb north through deep forests to Gasa, famed for its natural hot springs. Soak in mineral-rich pools said to possess curative powers, and share an evening of storytelling with local families in their homes, surrounded by the looming silhouette of snow peaks. Meals: all meals included Lodge: Stay in a local farmhouse OCTOBER 20: GASA TO LAYA A rugged drive winds to the Taktsimakhang military outpost, the last motorable frontier. From here, climb steadily on the steep trails until we reach Laya, one of Bhutan’s most remote villages. Since there are no official guest houses or lodges here, we will have the unique opportunity to be hosted by local families in the village. Or, we may decide to set up our high altitude trekking camp at a designated campground near the village. Meals: all meals included Lodge: Bhutan Himalaya Expedition Camps or stay in local homes OCTOBER 21: TREK TO LIMITHANG/EXPLORE LAYA Depending on local conditions closer to departure we have two options we can choose at a later date. We either continue trekking, heading upriver to Limithang, a seasonal yak‑herding encampment, to camp beneath the stars, or hike around Laya and surrounding areas to meet local herders and their families. Meals: all meals included Lodge: Bhutan Himalaya Expedition Camps or stay in local homes OCTOBER 22: RETURN TO LAYA/EXPLORING LAYA Retrace steps back to Laya, settling in before the coming celebration. This pause allows for exploration of local homes and acclimatization as the community prepares for its year’s most vibrant event. Meals: all meals included Lodge: Bhutan Himalaya Expedition Camps or stay in local homes OCTOBER 23 & 24: ROYAL HIGHLAND FESTIVAL IN LAYA Immerse yourself in the extraordinary Royal Highland Festival. Witness color‑saturated dances, traditional Layap songs, and an extraordinary yak pageant, where animals adorned with finery parade through the village. Sample highlander cuisine, sit with families in their homes, and marvel at a festival that bridges ancient customs with modern Bhutanese pride. Each night, return to our expedition camp or village lodging, the valley echoing with the sounds of singing and laughter. Meals: all meals included Lodge: Bhutan Himalaya Expedition Camps or stay in local homes OCTOBER 25: HELI FLIGHT TO BUMTHANG/TRANSFER BY ROAD Board a scenic helicopter flight to Bumthang, the cultural heartland of Bhutan. Rolling valleys and sacred sites unfold below. Upon arrival, visit Jakar Dzong and local monasteries, before settling at the charming Swiss Guest House at Kharsumphe. Meals: all meals included Lodge: Swiss Guest House OCTOBER 26 & 27: EXPLORING BUMTHANG Spend two days encountering Bhutan’s deepest spiritual and historical roots. We will have a detailed tour of the Wangduechhoeling Palace, the former royal residence built in 1857 by the Trongsa Penlop, Jigme Namgyel, father of Bhutan’s first king. It was the first palace in Bhutan not designed as a fortress and today serves as a museum where rooms are preserved with royal artifacts, cultural treasures, photographs, and personal belongings that bring the early monarchy to life. From Jakar Valley we trek to Tang to visit the Ogyen Choling Museum where we enjoy the hospitality of Ashi Kunzang Roder and her Swiss Forester husband, Walter Roder at their beautiful old restored traditional Bhutanese 'castle'. Also during our time in Jakar we set out on foot across the valley floor following the traditional Pilgrim’s Walk. The path links the major monasteries and temples that have shaped the valley’s identity for centuries. Jakar Dzong, known as the Castle of the White Bird, stands high on a ridge above the valley and has been both an administrative and monastic center since the 16th century. Jambay Lhakhang , one of the 108 temples built by Tibetan king Songtsen Gampo in the 7th century, is among the oldest Buddhist temples in Bhutan and remains an important site for festivals. Continuing along the trail, the walk leads to Kurjey Lhakhang, a complex of temples built around a cave where Guru Rinpoche meditated and left the imprint of his body in the rock. This site is one of the most sacred pilgrimage destinations in the country. A little further lies Tamshing Lhakhang, founded in 1501 by the great Bhutanese saint Pema Lingpa . Its murals, some painted by the master himself, are considered among Bhutan’s most important treasures. After Tamshing, continue to Konchogsum Lhakhang , a temple dating to the 7th century, also linked to King Songtsen Gampo. Recently renovated after fire damage, it houses a revered statue of the Buddha that locals believe has the power to speak. As the walk concludes, return to Jakar town for a visit to the Red Panda Brewery. Here you can taste the locally brewed beer and enjoy Swiss-style cheese made in the valley. If his health and schedule permits we meet Fritz Maurer , the Swiss pioneer who introduced cheese making to Bumthang and later founded the brewery. Over a glass of his craft beer and a plate of cheese, he shares stories of Swiss-Bhutanese friendship and his lifelong work blending the two cultures in food and drink. It is a relaxed and memorable way to close a day spent walking in the footsteps of Bhutan’s oldest royal friends and wellwishers, “Apa” Fritz and Monica von Schulthess. On the final evening in Bumthang, raise a glass at a farewell dinner with Fritz Maurer at the historic Swiss Guest House — an institution blending Swiss alpine flavors with Bhutanese warmth. Meals: all meals included Lodge: Swiss Guest House OCTOBER 28: FLIGHT TO PARO Return by domestic flight to Paro, where leisure time allows for reflection, local shopping, or optional light touring. Overnight in Paro. Meals included: Lunch, Dinner Accommodations: Nemjo Heritage Lodge , Tiger's Nest Camp or the Olathang Lodge OCTOBER 29: TIGER’S NEST MONASTERY & DEPARTURE Rise early for Bhutan’s most iconic pilgrimage: the hike to Taktsang (Tiger’s Nest) Monastery, perched high on a cliffside, as though suspended between earth and sky. After a rewarding climb, enjoy a leisurely lunch back in Paro town. Later this evening, we treat you to a traditional Bhutanese hot stone bath, known as Dotsho. This unique experience involves soaking in a bath heated by river stones that are roasted until red-hot. The stones release minerals into the water, which are believed to have therapeutic properties. This relaxing bath is perfect for soothing sore muscles after a hike and offers a window into traditional Bhutanese wellness practices. Dinner follows and a well-deserved rest in our plush safari tents. Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner Accommodations: The Gangtey Tent Resort or comparable APRIL 23: GANGTEY EXPOLRATION/NUNNERY/RHODODENDRONS/SWISS CHEESE Begin the day with a relaxed morning in the serene Gangtey Valley. Enjoy a leisurely breakfast at the lodge, taking in the tranquil surroundings and preparing for a day of exploration. Gangtey is known for its beautiful, wide valley and the presence of the rare black-necked cranes during the winter months. After breakfast, we have a few different options for the day. Option 1: take a walk down the valley to the Shechen Orgyen Chozong Nunnery, located at the south end of Gangtey Valley. This nunnery is a peaceful retreat where over one hundred Bhutanese nuns live, meditate, and study under the guidance of Dilgo Khyentse Yangsi Rinpoche and Shechen Rabjam Rinpoche, two revered Buddhist reincarnate lamas. We take some time to explore the grounds, observe the architectural details, and enjoy the serene atmosphere before heading back to the lodge. Option 2: Longtey Loma Rhododendron Hike If you're in the mood something more challenging. take the scenic hike on the Longtey Loma trail. This trail is known for its stunning rhododendron forests, which are particularly breathtaking when in bloom. The hike can be challenging but incredibly rewarding with its views and floral beauty. It's a fantastic way to experience Bhutan's natural landscape and take in the fresh mountain air. Option 3: Visit to Gogona to see its Swiss Cheese Making Diary Cooperative. Take the strenuous hike to Gogona village to learn about the traditional Swiss cheese-making process, started by the Swiss industrialist Fritz von Schulthess, a friend of the Third King of Bhutan, and later supported by the Swiss government in the 1980s.We learn about the local dairy cooperative and the community's efforts in dairy production, and of course, sample some of the delicious cheese. At the end of the day we return to the lodge for happy hour by a cozy iron stove and reflect on hiking among rhododendrons, visiting the Buddhist nuns, or tasting Swiss cheese in Bhutan! Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner Accommodations: The Gangtey Tent Resort or comparable APRIL 24: MORNING WALK/DRIVE TO PARO/ ARCHERY MATCH Begin the day with an invigorating country walk up to the Lawala Pass. This scenic route offers an opportunity to see valley homes and get a sense of the lay of the land before our vans pick us up to continue the 5-hour drive to Paro. On the way, we stop at the Lamperi Botanical Park to participate in the colorful annual folk festival celebrating the arrival of rhododendron season. In Paro, stay at the grande dame of Bhutanese lodges, the Olathang cottages. Built to house guests for the fourth king's 1972 coronation, it still retains its original charm and traditional character, nestled on a pine-forested hill overlooking the town of Paro. In the late afternoon or early evening, join us for traditional archery on the grounds of the lodge. Archery is the national sport of Bhutan and this activity is not only a fun way to engage in some healthy competition but also an opportunity to delve into Bhutanese culture and traditions. Whether you're a seasoned archer or trying it for the first time, this experience is fun for one and all! After this eventful day, spend your evening relaxing at the resort. Enjoy a sumptuous dinner at the Olathang restaurant, which serves a blend of Bhutanese and international cuisine. Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner Accommodations: The Olathang Hotel or comparable APRIL 25: HIKE TO TIGER'S NEST/PARO MARKET/HAA Start early with a hike to the iconic Tiger's Nest Monastery (Paro Taktsang). This sacred site, perched dramatically on a cliff 2,000 feet (610 meters) above the Paro valley, is a must-visit destination in Bhutan. The trek to Tiger's Nest is approximately 4.5 kilometers each way and involves a steep ascent through beautiful forested areas, offering stunning views of the surrounding mountains and valleys. The total hike can take between 4 to 6 hours, including time spent exploring the monastery and its surroundings. Remember to wear comfortable hiking shoes and bring plenty of water. After descending from the monastery, head back to Paro to spend some time exploring the Paro Market. This local market offers a glimpse into Bhutan's vibrant culture and is a great place to pick up last minute souvenirs and gifts: Look for traditional Bhutanese textiles, handicrafts, and local produce. The market is also a good spot to interact with local artisans and learn more about Bhutanese crafts and traditions. This afternoon, following lunch we drive two hours to the Haa Valley, staying at either the Katsho Eco Camp, which provides a refreshing sense of camping and being in the great outdoors or, alternately, at a historic old governor's mansion, the Zingkha Heritage Lodge. Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner Accommodations: The Katsho Eco Camp, the Haa Zingkha Lodge or comparable APRIL 26: HAA PANORAMIC HIKE Today we explore the Haa Valley along the Panoramic Trail which climbs and descends through wooded slopes to circumnavigate this scenic high valley. We stop at the interesting cliffside Jungney Temple, built into a natural cliff, and featuring exqusite and rare wall to ceiling murals of the three goddesses of Longevity, Compassion, and Wisdom. This evening try the ancient Bhutanese custom of medicinal hot-tubbing using cooked mineral rocks, fortified by beers and the local rice-brew Ara. Try the delicious Haa specialty dumplings, Hoentey. Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner Accommodations: The Katsho Eco Camp, the Haa Zingkha Lodge or comparable APRIL 27: BANGKOK, THAILAND/ DEPARTURE This morning we bring you back to the airport in time for you to catch your flight to Bangkok or another gateway city, from where you can connect with your international flight home, or travel to other destinations. Your flight KB152 departs at 11:50AM and arrives in Bangkok at 04:00PM. ABOUT CULTURAL EXPEDITIONS Our cultural expeditions are bespoke itineraries designed for active travelers that combine guided excursions, cultural insights, art and customs, with distinguished accommodations featuring a traditional ambience. Our journeys are small group adventures of usually 8 to 12 travelers, with a maximum of 16 guests per group. Unlike most tour providers who think nothing of a single guide leading an entire busload of travelers, we maintain a maximum of 4 guests per Bhutan Himalaya Expeditions guide, not counting support staff. This ensures that our journeys feel more like a shared adventure with local friends than a tourist's jaunt through the countryside. GETTING THERE Fly from your home city to Bangkok, Singapore, New Delhi Kolkata, or Kathmandu (Main Gateway Cities)* Overnight Fly from Gateway City to Paro, Bhutan. IMPORTANT: Bhutan Himalaya Expeditions makes round-trip flight arrangements from the Gateway City of your choice to Bhutan as a courtesy to our travelers. Airfare is not included in trip price. OUR TRAVEL EXTENSIONS (with optional Bangkok Transit arrangements) If you're thinking of traveling to some of the other interesting destinations in the region before or after Bhutan you may like to consider our travel extensions. SPOTLIGHT Bhutan: Hidden Lands of Happiness Clouds over Pazhi Lhakhang, 2001, © John Wehrheim Text and Images, John Weirheim January 11, 2023 at 7:11:50 PM By special permission to Bhutan Himalaya Expeditions Bhutan Himalaya is proud to feature these iconic images of our native landscape, taken by our friend the award-winning photographer, artist and documentary filmmaker, John Wehrheim, accompanied by excerpted text from his highly-atmospheric book Bhutan: Hidden Lands of Happiness . John captures the personal stories and the stirring landscapes of his Hawaiian home and the Bhutan Himalaya where he has traveled extensively, two Edenic, some would say endangered, places that have left an imprint on his heart and his spectacular art. In an age of throwaway images, his portraits linger in the mind long after you’ve seen them, elevating the essential dignity of his subjects. John has worked for the Sierra Club Bulletin , National Geographic and Time-Life Books . More recently his work has been published by Smithsonian , Honolulu Magazine , Huffington Post , London Daily Mail , Slate , Buzz Feed , Trip , The Sun , and First To Know , and featured in the 50th Anniversary Issue of The Surfer’s Journal . Mother and children, Lubcha, Laya, 1994 © John Wehrheim Mother & Children, Laya A caterpillar with a thin mushroom growing between its eyes, the strange and rare yartsa goenbub, has become the main source of cash for most Laya people. Traditional oriental herbalists believe yartsa goenbub (Ophiocordyceps sinensis) prolongs life, acting as a powerful aphrodisiac and general panacea. With China’s new prosperity, the demand and price for yartsa goenbub have skyrocketed. The Chinese use farm implements and tractors to turn the soil and harvest yartsa goenbub; Bhutanese use their hands, as well as the sharp eyes and tiny fingers of their children, and do it without destroying their pastures. Sonam Drugyel lets loose his arrow, Tashi Thongmen Dzong, 2004, © John Wehrheim Divine Archer Sonam Drugyel wears his traditional gho with contemporary boots while competing in an age-old archery contest with a high-tech compound bow. Playing in a field next to a 17th Century Dzong, Sonam symbolizes Bhutan's blend of the ancient with the present. When the 15th-century Master of Truth, Lord of Beings, Drukpa Kinley was staying at Lady Semzangmo’s house in the Tibetan province of Yamdrok, he had a dream. Early the next morning, he strung his bow and loosed a wailing arrow into the southern sky. “Fly southwards to benefit all beings and the Tradition,” he intoned, “and land at the house of a blessed, heaven-favored girl.” Laya School, 2005, © John Wehrheim Highland Education The end of theocracy and the establishment of monarchy in 1907 began a gradual shift from monastic to secular education. The Royal family and nobility started the trend by sending their sons and daughters to private missionary schools in Kalimpong and Darjeeling. Then the Royal Government followed during the reign of the 3rd King, providing scholarships for particularly talented students to train as teachers, administrators, engineers, forest officers, and doctors. Bhutan provides eleven years of free schooling: one year of pre-primary school, six years of primary, two years of junior high and two years of high school. Many Bhutanese study abroad in English speaking countries. The vast majority of these Bhutanese students return to their homeland. Planting rice in Lobesa, 2005 © John Wehrheim Planting Rice In 2013, Bhutan announced it would be the world's first country to go one-hundred percent organic and started a qualification program supported by Organics International. Because the traditional cultural practices of Bhutan’s isolated communities have remained unchanged for centuries, the country is a treasure house of biodiversity with over six-hundred unique cultivars, landraces and wild species of rice. These lead the country’s crop production with estimated ninety-thousand metric tons in 2017. While Bhutan is close to achieving its goal of food self-sufficiency, rice yield falls about forty-percent short of rice consumption, with the balance imported from India—though local varieties are much preferred and command a premium in the market. Neylu snow, Laya, 2006 © John Wehrheim Neylu snow, Laya, 2006 The snowfall thickens as we break trail down to Neylu through knee-deep powder. All around the villagers celebrate the harvest festival of Awlley. During Awlley unmarried girls go boldly from house to house singing and dancing while some married women follow, hiding in blankets, peeking out to judge the families’ hospitality while seeking a match for their sons. If a hidden woman likes what she sees, she will subtly reveal herself and if the women of the household recognize her and consider her sons a good match, they will pull her blankets away and offer her tea and talk of marriage. Jomolhari 1994 © John Wehrheim Jomolhari, 1994 “Seventy-two percent of Bhutan is under pristine forest cover. Our constitution decrees that a minimum of sixty percent of Bhutan's total land shall remain under forest cover for all time... Our entire country generates 2.2 million tons of carbon dioxide, but our forests, they sequester more than three times that amount, so we are a net carbon sink for more than four million tons of carbon dioxide each year. Of the 200-odd countries in a world threatened with climate change, it looks like we are the only one that's carbon neutral.” ~ Lyonpo Tshering Tobgay, Prime Minister of Bhutan Sonam, Tshering and Namgay, Tango, 2002 © John Wehrheim Three Monks, 2002 I found a community of brothers living in small, scattered cottages and caves, hidden near the tree line. Each hermitage overlooked mountains, forests and sky. Wild animals were abundant and birdsong filled the air. The hermits were the hardest working, healthiest and most intelligent men I had met in Bhutan. They retreated in prayer, yoga and meditation for periods of three years and three phases of the moon. But if another monk needed a hand, they would show up and work from sunrise to sunset, sometimes joking and laughing but mostly focused on the job, doing the work like a silent dance. Prayer wheels on the trail to Taktshang, 1991 © John Wehrheim Prayer wheels on the trail to Taktshang, 1991 Painted with the syllables Om Mani Padme Hung, the spinning cylinders repeat the ancient mantra of wisdom and compassion. Though flowing water has powered prayer wheels and flour mills for centuries, electricity and hydropower first came to Bhutan in the 1960’s. Bhutan’s hydros are “run-of-the-river” without storage dams, significant deforestation or major population displacement. Diversions have state-of-the-art fish ladders that diminish disruption to aquatic migration. The Bhutanese believe that earth, trees, sky, and water all contain spirits and are guarded by protective deities. They know on every level, from superstition to science, that if they cut down their trees, pollute the air and foul the water, their prayer wheels will no longer send blessing out into the universe and the primary source of their life and livelihood will dry up. Karma Yuden and baby Tenzie, Gasa Hot Springs, 2004 © John Wehrheim Mother and baby, Gasa Hot Springs, 2004 Bhutanese make frequent pilgrimages to remote and often hidden hot springs. Called tsha chu and found throughout Bhutan, they are places of healing, community, rest and devotion. The chanting and prayer begin at dawn with the purifying sang ritual of burning juniper. In the evenings, around the cooking fires, beer, and ara flow, new friends are made and stories told. The songs and dances go late into the night while young men and women slip off to meet in the dark steaming baths. And day or night the healing sounds of laughter lighten the air. Previous Next Granny Lhanzom, Grandmother Gaki Om, Grandmother Tshering Dolkar, Karma Wangmo with little Metho, Thimphu, 2005, © John Wehrheim Four Generations of Bhutanese Women Her mother died when Lhanzom was a teenager. This early springtime festival celebrates their important contributions to Bhutanese history, and the colorful role they play in protecting the cultural treasures of the country, providing us with a wonderful excuse to visit the festival and range across the Bhutanese countryside. We start with the western cultural centers before making our way overland across to the surpassingly lovely valleys of central Bhutan, with stops along the way to visit a series of unforgettable monasteries and temples. A short flight past the peaks and valleys of Bhutan, and a final climb up to fabulous “Tiger’s Nest,” closes this remarkable 2020 adventure. — To see photographs and read about a recent warriors pageant festival, please see our picture story: Bhutan’s Procession of Warriors Festival. Stroll through the winding streets to Wat Visoun, one of the oldest and most beautiful temples in Luoangphabhang. Visit That Makmo, also known as the "Watermelon Stupa." Continue to Wat Xieng Thong, the city's best-known and most visited monastery. The three tiered roof of the monastery sweeps low to the ground and the walls have been beautifully decorated in black lacquer and gold leaf with beautiful scenes carved in gold-painted bas-relief drawn from Hindu and Buddhist mythology. The back of Wat Xieng Thong features an intricate glass mosaic of the tree of life set on a dark red background. Later, take a walk along the Nam Khan River to Wat Khili. Here, at the temple, you will be introduced to a Luang Prabang native who has produced photography projects about world religions, and participated in art and education projects in Laos. He currently has a permanent exhibition, 'The Floating Buddha', inside the temple. He will take you on a private tour of the exhibition and share his extensive knowledge and expertise on Laos. Transfer to/from restaurant Restaurant: Tamnak Lao Restaurant Luang Prabang (Dinner) Overnight in Luang Prabang DAY 3: LUANG PRABANG (BREAKFAST) Excursion by boat to Tham Pak Ou Caves (5-6 hours) Travel up the Mekong River to the steep limestone cliffs overlooking the Mekong and Nam Ou rivers, home to the Tham Pak Ou Caves. These extraordinary caves are filled with Buddha images, of every style and material imaginable. On the way to the Caves, stop at Ban Xang Hai Village (If time permits). The village is open 6.00 am - 15.00 pm and closed every major Buddhist holiday. This traditional Lao village is famous for the production of lao lao , the local alcoholic brew distilled from rice. The village also provides an opportunity to learn how to make traditional Laotian Corn Leaf Paper and Rice Tree Paper. First you learn how the material for corn leaf and rice tree paper are sourced and then prepare the paper from the raw materials provided. Once the paper is dry you will be shown how it can be fashioned into lampshades, a booklet or a postcard. You get to keep what you make as mementos of your visit. Overnight in Luang Prabang DAY 4: LUANG PRABANG (BREAKFAST) Sightseeing in Luang Prabang Luang Prabang, the ancient capital city of the Lan Xang Kingdom, is famous for its historic temples and beautiful setting surrounded by mountains. In 1995 it was designated a Unesco World Heritage Site. Visit Talat local market (Tour will start early morning) (30 minutes) Visit the National Museum (former Royal Palace) and Wat Mai Visit the National Museum (Royal Palace), a modest but graceful building which combines traditional Lao and French beaux-arts motifs. This turn-of-the century royal residence has been preserved as it was when the royal family last lived here and provides unique insights into the history of Laos. Then, visit the Hor Phrabang, a royal temple built on the palace grounds especially to house Laos' most sacred Buddha statue. The Buddha, cast in gold, silver and bronze alloy, stands at 83 cm tall and weighs about 50 kgs (more than 110lbs). Continue to Wat Mai, which was built in 1821 during the reign of King Manthatourath, and was once the residence of Phra Sangkharaj, the Patriarch of Laos' Buddhist clergy. Excursion to Kuang Si Waterfalls (3 hours) From Luang Prabang, travel by vehicle to the Kuang Si falls. The waterfalls are in a perfect natural setting near Luang Prabang. The multi-tiered falls tumble over limestone formations into a series of turquoise pools. Bring your swim suits and sandals if you'd like to dip your toe or part of your body in a relatively gentle pool. Please exercise caution! During certain times of the year, the falls can be dangerous because of strong torrents and the volume of water rushing downstream. Visit the nearby village of Ban Ou or Ban Na Ouane, before returning to Luang Prabang by vehicle. Overnight in Luang Prabang DAY 5: LUANG PRABANG (BREAKFAST - DINNER) Today you have a free morning to enjoy a cozy breakfast for two at an interesting local cafe, relax at the hotel or do some exploring on your own. Later in the afternoon your guide will meet you at the hotel and take you by local tuk tuk to the pier. Board the local boat and then sit back and relax on a short cruise on the mighty Mekong River. Take in the scenes of local life alongside the river and look out to the distant misty mountains. Farther down the river, the boat will bring you to the opposite bank where the temple Wat Had Siew is located. After exploring the temple environs, you will be introduced to your monk teacher who will take you through a short guided meditation (your guide is on hand to help with the translation.) After clearing your mind through meditation amid the spiritual surroundings, travel by boat and tuk tuk to a local yoga school (optional). After a warm welcome by the instructor, you will be taught some basic yoga aimed at improving mental and physical balance. Be sure to wear or bring some comfortable clothes if you plan on doing yoga this afternoon. At the end of the day return to your hotel by vehicle. Restaurant : Dyen Sabai Restaurant and Lounge (Dinner) Overnight in Luang Prabang DAY 6: LUANG PRABANG - VIENTIANE (BREAKFAST) Transfer by air conditioned vehicle (6 kms) Flight from Luang Prabang to Vientiane Transfer by air conditioned vehicle Sightseeing in Vientiane The capital city of Laos and the seat of Laotian government sits on a bend of the Mekong River amid the fertile alluvial plains. Vientiane (pronounced Wieng Chang by the locals) is a laid-back city with lots of history, interesting temples and lively markets. Overnight in Vientiane DAY 7: VIENTIANE (BREAKFAST) Sightseeing in Vientiane (8 hours) The capital city of Laos, Vientiane, still feels like a sleepy city with a relaxed charm, tree-lined boulevards, beautiful temples and colorful markets. Tour the many highlights of the city, including Pha That Luang, a gleaming golden stupa with a vibrantly painted interior (below) that is perhaps the most important national monument in Laos; Ho Pha Keo, the royal temple, now a museum with beautiful examples of Buddhist sculptures; Wat Si Saket, another built in 1818; Patuxai, a monumental arch inspired by Paris' Arc de Triomphe, but executed with Lao motifs. Stop by the Cooperative Orthotic and Prosthetic Enterprise (COPE) for a reckoning with the awful legacy of American bombs, and the progressive work of the organization rehabilitating those injured by unexploded ordnances. See Wat Si Muang, a gold monument built in 1563. End your day at the Talaat Sao, or the "morning market" (actually open all day), the best place to buy traditional Lao fabrics. Overnight in Vientiane DAY 8: VIENTIANE (BREAKFAST - DINNER) Today you have a chunk of leisure time to explore on your own, try some interesting local restaurants, visit an art gallery or just spend some time reading and relaxing at the hotel. This evening visit the home of a local chef and learn how to cook delicious Lao dishes. Travel to Ban Nong Bone Village, where the Head Chef, Vanpheng, will welcome you to her home and teach your cooking class. Over the next few hours you will learn how to cook three local dishes using traditional ingredients and techniques. Afterwards, relax and enjoy the feast everyone has created together. Traditional sweets and snacks will also be on offer, although the savoury dishes tend to be most popular to prepare. Tropical drinks are also included with the meal. Say farewell to Vanpheng and spend the rest of the evening at leisure (or see recommendation below): Recommended Tour: This evening we recommend a stroll along the banks of the Mekong River through Chao Anou Park and the Night Market, observing locals and taking in the views. Both are situated along the Mekong and this area comes alive after dark. Adventurous foodies can sample a wide range of local snacks along the way. Cap off the night with a bottle of the Beerlao, a tasty local beer brewed from local rice and high-quality malt. Overnight in Vientiane DAY 9: VIENTIANE (BREAKFAST) Transfer by air conditioned vehicle Flight from Vientiane to Bangkok REQUEST THIS ITINERARY WHAT TO KNOW BEFORE YOU GO The activities on this trip are rated as moderate and suits a wide range of interests and physical fitness levels. A delicious Bhutanese spread at the Happiness Fields Homestay #3. Ama Om’s Homestay Ama Om’s Homestay , nestled amidst fields, orchards, and a vibrant mountain stream, offers a unique glimpse into the heart of Bhutanese culture and hospitality. The endearing rustic charm of this serene homestay is heightened the hanging frames of sepia-toned historical family photographs and an eclectic collection of Bhutanese contemporary art, thanks to its association with Asha Kama Wangdi, a leading figure in modern Bhutanese art. Known affectionately as “Asha,” Kama Wangdi grew up on this very homestead, which is now managed by his sister, Ama Chimi Om. The home is a testament to Bhutanese tradition, with rooms made colorful by the carefully preserved antique heirloom furniture and artifacts, alongside paintings by Asha Kama and his students. The culinary offerings at the homestay are equally traditional, with meals prepared from locally grown ingredients and ancient recipes, including the heady rice wine still brewed faithfully, in keeping with old family traditions, by Kama’s sister. One of the highlights of staying at Ama Om’s is the traditional hot stone bath experience. Guests are invited to soak in wooden tubs filled with water heated by red-hot stones, a practice deeply embedded in Bhutanese healing traditions. This experience is enhanced by the natural beauty of the surroundings, where Himalayan cherry blossoms and the sounds of a rushing stream create a backdrop reminiscent of a Japanese haiku. The essence of Bhutanese hospitality is palpable throughout the stay, from the warm welcome by the family’s dogs, Kongtu and Ruby, to the comfort provided by the homestay’s low-ceilinged rooms, and the cozy kitchen. Visitors are treated to scratch-made local delicacies like mengay, a rich Bhutanese rice “pizza,” served by Ama Om, her daughter Risel, and kitchen helper Doema, making each guest feel like part of the family. Ama Om’s Homestay offers visitors a deep connection to the land, its people, and their traditions. It stands as a beacon of the Bhutanese way of life, preserving the simplicity, honesty, and graciousness that are the hallmarks of the nation’s heritage. The lovely old house where the founding father of Bhutanese contemporary art grew up is at the heart of Ama Om's homestay. © Karma Dorji #2 The Mendegang Heritage Home This property is not just a residence but a symbol of cultural and historical significance. Nestled in the ancient capital region of Punakha, this ancestral home has been the seat of a noble family that has contributed prominent figures to Bhutanese society, including a former Prime Minister and a high-ranking reincarnated lama. The home itself is situated on a piece of land that, from afar, resembles a mandala—a sacred symbol in Himalayan Buddhism representing cosmic harmony. This resemblance has made the Mendegang Heritage Home a focal point for communal gatherings and religious celebrations. Mendegang Heritage houses three shrine rooms dedicated to the three primary figures of Bhutanese Buddhism: Maitreya, the Future Buddha; Shakyamuni, also known as Prince Siddhartha or the Buddha of our current eon; and Guru Rimpoche, the revered "Lotus-Born" saint of Bhutan. These shrines are adorned with intricate Buddhist murals—painted with natural pigments—drawn from the Drukpa Kagyu and Nyingma Buddhist traditions. It's a striking example of traditional Bhutanese architecture, reminiscent of a Swiss chalet, surrounded by beautiful hanging wisterias and bougainvilleas. The property also boasts a lovely Buddhist stupa that welcomes visitors, enhancing the spiritual ambiance. The home's connection to the land is palpable, with gardens that yield fresh produce like beans, maize, onions, and leafy greens, and an orchard that bears pomegranates when in season. These ingredients are used to create authentic farm-to-table meals for the guests, allowing them to savor the flavors of the region. For visitors, the Mendegang Heritage Home offers a genuine experience of Bhutanese lifestyle and culture. It stands as a testament to the agricultural heritage of the Punakha region and provides a serene retreat for those looking to immerse themselves in the authenticity of Bhutan. This handsome old ancestral house in Mendegang, Punakha, makes for an unforgettable homestay experience. Through its scalloped Bhutanese windows, one of the most storied homes in Bhutan provides a graciously authentic glimpse into the kingdom's history and folk culture. © Karma Dorji #1 The Ogyenchhoeling Manor and Museum Deep in the serene Tang Valley of central Bhutan lies the Ogyen Choling Manor & Museum , a fortress dating back to the 14th century that now serves as one of the most authentic lodging experiences in the country. This historic manor, once the residence of regional rulers and nobility, is currently managed by Ashi Kunzang Choden Roder, a 20th-generation descendant of the original founders, and her husband Walter Roder, a Swiss forester. The couple has revitalized this Bhutanese heritage site, transforming it into a distinctive lodge that offers travelers a rare chance to immerse themselves in a homestay deeply rooted in local history, culture, and community revitalization. Ashi Kunzang, a renowned Bhutanese author and literary figure, has lived and worked across the globe, including in the United States, Laos, India, and the Philippines. Her literary contributions include popular works such as "The Circle of Karma," "Bhutanese Tales of the Yeti," and "Dawa: The Story of a Stray Dog in Bhutan." The guest house at Ogyen Choling is a testament to environmental stewardship and community engagement, utilizing solar power for most heating needs and discouraging the use of plastic bottles. The on-site restaurant and guest services prioritize the use of local produce grown on the estate, ensuring that most daily necessities are sourced from within the vicinity of the historic structure. The manor also houses a comprehensive folk museum, boasting one of the most extensive collections in Bhutan. Accommodations at Ogyen Choling include a variety of unique options. The Tshamkhang, or Hermitage, is an independent cottage with two bedrooms and a shared living room featuring a traditional wood-burning stove. The Nubgothang, or West Gate Field, offers four rooms, while the Shagor, a two-story building that encloses the central tower, provides eight guest rooms. Each room is equipped with individual heating facilities, including the region's distinctive wood-burning stoves known as Bukhari, as well as electric heaters. All rooms come with attached bathrooms that include Swiss-imported sanitary installations. Guests at Ogyen Choling can indulge in a variety of activities during their stay. They can relax in the peaceful surroundings, explore the museum, visit significant Buddhist sites and temples in the valley, learn about local agricultural and weaving practices, meditate in the holy cave of Longchen Rabjam, and participate in cooking classes, lectures, and interactive sessions on topics such as culture, gender, agriculture, storytelling, and the history of weaving when available. This immersive experience at Ogyen Choling not only provides a tranquil retreat but also offers a deep connection to the cultural and spiritual heritage of Bhutan. I loved the adventure, and I loved the discovery. Unlike anything else I have ever experienced!” - Lola W. The Guyett family on the trail © Bhutan Himalaya archives “I loved the fact that there were planned activities but with flexibility built in. On one occasion we got to sit with a monk as he recited his morning prayers and my guide stayed there with me—there was never any pressure to progress—yet he was always ready to move on when I was. I loved every moment of my time with your company and I hope to return again to Bhutan. I am strongly recommending that anyone traveling to Asia should consider discovering Bhutan with your team. Discovering the superlative charms of Bhutan's countryside during the kingdom's lush, green season SHARE: Facebook X (Twitter) WhatsApp LinkedIn Pinterest Copy link This journey covers the kingdom's scenic valleys of Paro, Haa, Gangtey-Phobjikha, and the twin capitals of Punakha and Thimphu. We take vigorous hikes, sample the hearty regional cuisine and volunteer at a beautiful nunnery that seems suspended in the lap of mist-wreathed mountains. As we succumb to the ample charms of the countryside and the Bhutanese people, we work our way through a Bhutan 'abundance' list that includes laughter, humility, respect, caring, mutuality and happiness. HEALTH & SAFETY HEALTH & SAFETY We are following strict national and international safety guidelines and protocols (Royal Government of Bhutan, WHO, and CDC (US) recommendations) to keep you, our staff, and the Bhutanese people safe. For further details please email us contact us using the Reserve Online button on this page. *Bangkok is the primary Gateway City and offers the most frequent and most reliable flights to Bhutan. OUR TRAVEL EXTENSIONS (with optional Bangkok Transit arrangements) If you're thinking of traveling to some of the other interesting destinations in the region before or after Bhutan you may like to consider our travel extensions.
