VIEW DAY BY DAY

DAY 01: KATHMANDU ARRIVAL & AIRPORT TRANSFER

Your guide from our Nepalese partners will meet you at the airport and escort you to your hotel . Depending on your flight timing, there may be time this afternoon to visit Kathmandu’s Durbar Square. Stay in Kathmandu at the legendary and iconic Kathmandu Guest House, renowned for birthing adventure travel in Nepal. As Lonely Planet Founder Tony Wheeler once wrote: “Kathmandu Guest House, like Istanbul, is a bottleneck, where everybody has to pass through at one point or the other.” Guests included a who's who of 1960s adventurers who first summited the highest peaks, rafted the deepest gorges, and walked uncharted trails to uncover something deeper in themselves and the world. The hotel now offers multi cuisine restaurants, a spa, conference halls, wellness centre, gym and yoga at the historic landmark in the heart of Thamel.

Meals: pay as you go to allow freedom for you to explore the local cuisine at your own comfort level

Accommodations: The Kathmandu Guest House

DAY 02: EXPLORE KATHMANDU'S ANCIENT HEART

You have a full day exploring Boudhanath, Pashupatinath and Patan's Durbar Square. Your guide will share explanations of the history and significance of the various sights and monuments and art you’ll encounter during the day. At Boudhanath, tomb of the Kasyapa Buddha, you’ll have time to explore the local markets and join Tibetan, Nepalese and Indian pilgrims in doing the sacred rounds of the temple. This afternoon you’ll visit the ancient royal palace of Patan, which faces on to magnificent Durbar Square. This concentrated mass of temples is perhaps the most visually stunning display of Newari architecture to be seen in Nepal. Temple construction in the square was mostly completed during the Malla period (14th to 18th centuries), and particularly during the reign of King Siddhinarsingh Malla (1619–1660).

DAY 03: DRIVE TO SUMMIT RIVER LODGE ( 100KM/4 HRS)

After breakfast, drive from the city, descending along the scenic NH04 Prithvi highway through the middle Himalayan range, to the Trisuli River bank beside the small town of Kurintar, a journey of approximately 4-5 hours. Leave your vehicle at this point and cross the river on a pedestrian bridge to the village Thuguwatar-on-Trisuli.  The village homes are strung out along the edges of a flat, fertile expanse of farmland, forested hills clothing their northern slopes.  Walk through the village for another 30 minutes to reach your lush river lodge, set on an isolated spur of the hills that slopes down steeply towards the Trisuli. After checking in and freshening up, we let the day cool down before our late afternoon exploration. Enjoy wonderful views of the natural forest across to the flowing waters of the river, the terraced fields, and the surrounding mountains. Your guided trail walk takes you to the homes of the Chepang and Magar tribal communities, which remain relatively untouched by modernity.  Expect calming views of cataracts cascading down hills into narrow gorges while butterflies of many varieties flit along the trail.  You may meet village women making the alcoholic brew from fermented cereals in the old way, in which case stop to take a taste, or to learn the ways.  Orchids hang from trees along shady paths and deep forests as we follow a narrow valley with a gushing stream. The path upstream goes to numerous pools and waterfalls deep enough to take a dip in, and we may stop to cool off. Return via a lower route through terraced fields beside Trisuli’s white sandy beaches to end your day back at the lodge.

Meals included: Breakfast & Dinner, (Lunch on your own; guide will provide reccommendations)

Accommodations: The Summit River Lodge (Kurintar)

DAY 04: VISIT THE OLD NEWARI TOWN OF BANDIPUR

Take an hour’s drive to picturesque Bandipur, nestled in the Himalayan foothills of Nepal, a place as famous for its natural beauty as for the hospitality of its people. Situated on a hilltop above the highway town of Dumre, Bandipur captivates with its cultural appeal and pristine scenery. This Newari town has preserved its historic flavour, and offers visitors a rich mix of history, architecture, breathtaking views, interesting caves and unspoiled landscapes.

Bandipur has been described as a natural ‘view tower’; indeed, one can enjoy a spectacular panorama of the entire Annapurna Range plus the peaks of Dhaulagiri, Manaslu and Langtang from here. Apart from the stunning views of the Himalaya and the Marsyangdi Valley, a visit to the town is an opportunity to get a closer look at Newar cultural life, with varied attractions ranging from the artistic to the scenic.

Meals included: Breakfast & Dinner, (Lunch on your own; guide will provide reccommendations)

Accommodations: The Summit River Lodge (Kurintar)

DAY 05: CABLE CAR TO MANAKAMANA TEMPLE

Take a morning drive to the Cable Car Terminus from where we ride the cable car high above tangerine and lime groves to the mountain-top shrine of Manakamana, the ‘Wish-Fulfilling Goddess’ of primeval times.   The temple itself is old while the town that has grown around it is new, consequences of the cable car installation. The shrine is attended by the older Magar tribal (shamanic) priests rather than the Brahmins who are the newer custodians of most Hindu temples in Nepal. On certain days of the week, pilgrims sacrifice goats to appease the Goddess or less bloodily, release pigeons in her honour, seeking her blessings for their heart’s deepest desires!  A trail descends to the Valley below, worn through the ages by the feet of innumerable pilgrims who walked these trails centuries before the cable car. If fitness allows, a hike back to the base is recommended, from where your driver and dedicated vehicle will take you back to the lodge.

Meals included: Breakfast & Dinner, (Lunch on your own; guide will provide reccommendations)

Accommodations: The Summit River Lodge (Kurintar)

DAY 06: DAY TRIP TO CHITWAN NATIONAL PARK

Start early in the morning for the approximately two-hour drive to Chitwan National Park, followed by a wildlife excursion by Jeep in the park (at breakfast, please give your guide US$75 each per person for this Jeep safari run by a third-party state park concessionaire). Keep your eye out for the legendary Asian One-horned Rhino whose population numbers are slowly but surely being nursed back to health. Tiger's have also been spotted but it's rare to have a sighting. Return to Summit River Lodge at the end of the excursion.

NOTES ON INDIAN VISAS

IF TRAVELING VIA INDIA

An Indian visa will be required before arrival, EVEN if you're only transiting through the Delhi airport. You can apply for an e-Visa before traveling via a simple online form. This is the Indian government e-visa issuer, although there are private ones also this is most reliable.

Link: Online Indian E-Visa

You’ll want to choose the Tourist e-Visa for 30 days, not the other kinds. The 30-day visa allows two entries into India, which is handy since they consider each transit a single trip. All e-Visas take at least 72 hours to process, so be sure to do it well ahead of time!

YOU CAN FLY BACK TO A DIFFERENT CITY

You can fly into Bhutan from one port of call, and fly back out to a different city. There are fare differences if you do that.

SPECIAL NOTES & DISCLAIMERS

ITINERARY

Please note that all trip and itinerary descriptions are accurate at the time of publication. While we strive to keep the actual running of the trips as close to our original description as possible we cannot rule out changes or modifications and, or, variations on the ground as a result of factors that may be beyond our control. If such circumstances occur, we always strive to do better, or at minimum match the trip described but this may not always be possible.

ACCOMMODATIONS

Infrequently, we may also have to swap out the lodges and accommodations listed on your trip as a result of seasonal overbooking; in such instances we will always find a comparable hotel of the same category and amenities as replacement/s.

AIRFARE COSTS

Please note that while we make every endeavor to accurately price our trips, airfares subject to change by the airline are outside our control. As a result, current charter flight costs currently included the trip trip may change and we may be forced to generate a final additional invoice to make up any such potential differences in cost. While we don't expect this to happen in this case, a reduced number of travelers may result in a per-individual fare increase for which we will send out an addendum invoice if the occasion arises, within reason, to cover any such potential shortfalls. Guests will be notified of any such changes well before trip departure.
