The Laya Festival Grounds is at an elevation of approximately 13,000 feet, which is 3,962 meters. If you haven’t spent time at those altitudes, but are physically fit and can hike steep uphill and downhill rocky paths and trails (we recommend the use of hiking poles), we are offering a few additional days of safer acclimatization hiking in Bhutan to help with the altitude exposure before arriving in Laya. The acclimatization will take us on a drive from Paro at approximately 6,800 feet (2,073 meters) to 13,000 feet (3,962 meters) at the Chele La Pass before descending to Haa Valley at approximately 8,500 to 9,000 feet to do some hiking. Then, a full day trek from Haa back to Paro over the Kaleyla Pass will bring us to just under 12,000 feet with safe options to descend to Haa Valley and take a drive to Paro instead if the altitude concerns persist. The second acclimatization hike will take us from Dochula at 10,000 (2,591 meters) feet to Lungchutse, just under 12,000 feet (3,658 meters). The one day trip from Punakha to Laya will start with a 4.5 hour drive from 4,000 feet to 5,000 feet (1,219 meters to 1,524 meters) and end with a 3 to 4.5-hour hike to Laya at 12,400 feet (3,780 meters) from the end of the road at Takshimakha Army Camp. For those with further altitude concerns, we will arrange a slower approach to Laya with an additional day in Gasa on October 21 or October 22. This will include a two-and-half-hour drive, approximately, from Punakha to Gasa at 9,200–9,350 feet (roughly 2,800–2,850 meters), with an overnight in Gasa in a traditional Bhutanese farmhouse hosted by a local family (with shared bath and toilets). The following day, we will drive from Gasa to Takshimakha Army Camp, roughly at 10,755 feet (3,278 meters), which will take 1.5 to 2 hours, followed by the steep uphill trek to Laya (2.5 hours to upto 4 hours depending on fitness and ability). This day's trek will present an elevation gain of approximately 1,700 to 1,800 feet or 518 to 549 meters. Please note that all elevations shown are close estimates and not exact figures. A NOTE ABOUT TRANSPORTATION FROM PUNAKHA TO GASA Please note that the drive from Punakha to Gasa will be in our four-wheel-drives and Toyota High-Roof Vans. The drive from Gasa to Laya, under current conditions, will take place in four-wheel-drive Bolero (Jeeps), more suited to the rough terrain. Boleros are less comfortable than our regular transportation for the remainder of the trip. • The COMO Metropolitan in Bangkok - Bhutan Himalaya Expeditions

Spotlight: HOTEL REVIEW The COMO Metropolitan in Bangkok Karma Dorji May 5, 2024 at 7:36:52 PM Even though it was nearly midnight when we pulled up in front of Bangkok's COMO Metropolitan, the sight of the hotel's tall terminalia trees wrapped in winking holiday lights cheered us. As soon as our car arrived at the hotel’s airy and modern front entrance, staff in crisp white uniforms opened our doors. Bags were whisked away at the front steps to mysteriously reappear in our rooms. Instead of the normal standing front desk check-in, a chilled welcome drink arrived at one of the Nordic minimalism sofas in the lobby, and we were invited to relax, with a polite staff member assisting with our arrival. At the hotel’s signature COMO Shambhala spa downstairs, each morning kicked off with yoga instruction from 8 to 9 am, conducted briskly and efficiently by a competent teacher and hygienic mats and props. The spa, billed as a haven for those ‘seeking tranquility amid the urban hustle,’ offers a range of wellness therapies we sadly didn’t try. The refined lobby signals luxury with a modern, understated design, creating a restful, visually-aesthetic environment. Cool, high thread count sheets and comforters ensure a good night’s sleep while thick bathrobes, smooth on the outside and warmly toweled on the interior, were welcome treats. In the morning we sat down to breakfast by the pool. By the time our perfectly cooked eggs arrived, the sun was beginning to climb. It was still pleasant, but we could feel the heat of Bangkok building. The tallest terminalia trees craned their necks over the turquoise pool like long-necked arboreal giraffes. A welcome breeze stirred, creating ripples and shaking loose a golden shower of delicate leaves over the water’s surface. As if on cue, at the far end of the pool, the pool cleaner dipped the long pole of his ‘fishing’ net in the water, scooped up a pile of leaves, flipped the net expertly over without losing the wet leaves, then dipped it in the water again, and again, as more and more leaves glittered down to the water’s surface. Watching the Sisyphean act was strangely comforting—a reminder that one can do even the most tedious tasks with apparent ease, precision, and concentration. That general sense of order marked our three-night stay at the Metropolitan, nestled off of a long private tree-lined avenue in the commercial Sathorn district of Bangkok, in the heart of the city. At meals in the Michelin-starred restaurant Nahm , staff appeared discreetly at the elbow to explain the menu. Poolside, cool, frosted glasses of strawberry and lemon, or orange-infused water appeared unbidden, dripping beads of condensation, a perfect balm in the searing midday madness of Bangkok. Attentive staff made guest interactions a pleasure, from the spontaneous folded hands wai , a traditional greeting of Thai hospitality, to the genuine smiles that came with each glance or encounter. The personalized concierge services, the seamless check-in, and many other details large and small were handled with unhurried care and thoughtfulness. The rooms—ours were upgraded from Studio to the Metropolitan, a perk for booking directly with the hotel—was a harmonious combination of sleek furnishings, warm color palettes, and thoughtful details such as the daily still-life platter of fresh fruits. In addition to the award-winning Nahm, room service included a 24-hour cafe perfect for the midnight munchies. A diverse range of flavors were on offer, showcasing Thai delicacies and international menu favorites, expertly crafted and plated, elevating the dining experience. In our three short days, we conveniently explored the dynamic energy of Bangkok with the relief of knowing we had a restful retreat on our return. Overall, the experience was a sophisticated escape in the heart of Thailand's bustling capital we can confidently recommend to our guests. We also found the hotel within walking distance of the city’s green lung, Lumphini Park, an oasis of ornamental shrubs, trees, walking paths, open-air exercise installations, where periodically huge local fairs are held. (During our stay we spent a pleasant evening at a massively attended fundraising fair to raise money for the Thai Red Cross). The vibrant Silom area in the Bangrak district, famous for its nightlife and local markets is also within short distance. What we loved: Next door was the more ostentatious Banyan Tree and the Sukhothai, but the Metropolitan falls in the Goldilocks zone, offering luxe surroundings and amenities while providing an unfussy sanctuary after each day’s exposure to the sensory overload of one of Asia’s busiest, and most cosmopolitan cities. Its low buildings and lush greenery make it feel like an elegant oasis amid the bristling nest of shiny-mirrored high rise towers. Pricepoint: We paid about $150/nightly for our upgraded Metropolitan room, which was well appointed with all the creature comforts we needed. Booking: Book directly at the COMO Metropolitan Bangkok for complimentary room upgrades and other perks. Tip: Booking directly with the hotel (price-matched) gives you a complimentary room upgrade as well as early check-in and late check-out. Cons: Views from the rooms can be improved vastly by a more recent window cleaning. Nice Touch: One of the most painful things about flying to Bhutan from Bangkok is the extremely early hour of the flights—usually 5 to 6 am, which means you must be at the airport between 3 to 4 am, which in turn means you may have to leave the hotel in the city around 2:20 and 3:20 am! The nice touch? They even had an elegantly boxed breakfast waiting downstairs for us that we could enjoy on the pre-dawn ride to the airport if we were so inclined. And for 500 Baht, a comfortable taxi with an extremely polite driver was on standby to whisk us to our early flight along the fast expressway and tolls were included in the price. Previous Next Upstairs, the bed was beautifully turned down, the mattress was like a cloud, and the curtains opened to a view of the trees bending in the breeze as if from a Japanese dream. In the closet, pairs of complimentary slippers—his and hers—made from bamboo fibers awaited use. • Bhutan’s Wild Wild East: A fascinating temple whose walls preserve a painful history of migration - Bhutan Himalaya Expeditions

A fascinating temple whose walls tell the story of how the Brokpa people of Sakteng and Merak in eastern Bhutan came to set down roots. That, and lots of drinking! I loved the adventure, and I loved the discovery. Unlike anything else I have ever experienced! Lola W., California Get similar features & travel information straight to your inbox with the Bhutan Himalaya Newsletter THE ANCIENT JOMO Doksa temple doors creak open, and I’m greeted by one of the most fascinating wall-to-wall murals I’ve ever seen. It’s the richly detailed story of an entire people: their trials, their desperation, an exodus from the land of their birth and, finally, peace in a land they probably knew only vaguely then as the “Southern Land of Medicinal Plants” or Lho Menjong. Ama Jomo advises her people: A section of the startling wall mural inside Sakteng valley's Jomo Doksa Temple. © Pema Wangchuk “Do you know the story of my people?” asks local guide Kota Sangay, as we make our way to the temple in Bhutan’s remote northeastern Sakteng valley. Now, as I explore the temple’s fascinating interiors, I understand why he asked me that question. For there, painted in vivid colors on the temple walls, is the ancient history of how Kota’s people, the Brokpas, came to Bhutan with their Moses-like matriarch Ama Jomo (for whom they named the temple). It’s a tale of persecution, of loss, and of redemption. Here, a scene describing the atrocities of the cruel King of Tshona—what was then part of southern Tibet—who caused them to flee their home. There, the perilous journey they took across the harsh landscape of deep gorges, snowy mountains, high passes, and freezing rivers. The author takes in the incredible details of the Jomo Doksa Temple wall mural. © Pema Wangchuk The story, as told: There lived a tyrannical king in Tshona, Tibet, who persecuted the [Brokpa] people with the most outrageous demands. The final straw came when he told them to move an entire mountain as it was keeping the sun’s rays from falling on his palace. Worked to near-death conditions at a mad and unrealistic task they could not complete the Brokpas, under the leadership of their matriarch Ama Jomo, decided it would be far easier to kill the king than move the mountain. And that they did: An act of violent regicide depicted graphically today on the Jomo Doksa temple walls. It was to escape the no-doubt harsh punishment waiting for them that Ama Jomo and her people fled south, finally arriving in Bhutan, where they settled down first in Sakteng and then Merak. And so here they remain to this day, Ama Jomo’s people, tending livestock—mostly yak and sheep—as the infertile terrain doesn’t allow for most types of cultivation. Young women in Sakten in their signature handwoven fabrics “Most people know Ama Jomo led our people here, but she had help from Lam Jaropa, our spiritual teacher who also came here with the people,” explains temple caretaker, Chhunku, pointing at a painting on the wall that illustrates how the people lost their way and fell off a cliff into a waterfall. Next to it, a panel that shows how the lama miraculously saved them by levitating them over the cliff. In the matriarchal-leaning, sheep and yak-rearing societies of Sakteng and Merak, women are strong figures within the community, literally and metaphorically. © Pema Wangchuk Promised Land: The rich, ancient cultures of Sakteng and Merak endure within the fragile ecology of the Sakteng Wildlife Sanctuary, protected as the 'home of the yeti' by the Bhutanese government's Nature Conservation Division and Department of Forestry Services. Toward the end of their journey, the Brokpa people first landed in Northeast India’s Tawang region, but the altitude was unsuitable for their yaks. They pressed on, eventually arriving in what’s presently Sakteng valley. “Ama Jomo waved a white cloth in the distant direction of Bhutan, and Lam Jaropa carved paths out of bare rocks as they climbed mountains on their treacherous journey,” my hosts tell me. “Oh, and they also fought lake-dwelling demons that ate people.” As the exiles made a final push towards Merak, the last high pass, Nakchung La, daunted many. Eventually, the older and weaker members of the tribe stayed on and set down roots in Sakteng. “The ones who weren’t strong enough to continue to Merak stayed back,” a Merak resident told me with some ill-concealed pride. “On Fire” The word Merak literally means “set on fire.” Legend has it that when the Brokpas came to Bhutan, the place was first cleared by fire to create their settlement. The houses in Merak today are a tight cluster with barely a muddy pathway between them, a fact that reflects their tight-knit society. The Brokpa language is unique and distinct with regional influences from Kurtoep (the language of eastern Bhutan’s Kurtoe region), Tibetan, and Sharchop (the dominant language in Bhutan’s far-east). Their traditional wear includes colorful weaves and patterns—what we’d describe as “jackets” and “skirts,” for the women, and the heavier sheepskin, leather and yak-hair textiles for the men. A split-frame of a man and woman from the Brokpa culture of eastern Bhutan in traditional attire. © Pema Wangchuk The author and her host at the drinking ceremony. © Pema Wangchuk It's a wild party: The traditional Brokpa wine offering called Tshogchhang Alcohol is an essential part of eastern Bhutanese hospitality but, oh my, the Brokpas sure know how to take it up a notch! If you visit Merak, you’ll be welcomed by a group of locals (mostly women) who’ll prepare a Tshogchhang, or ‘sacred wine of welcome.’ It’s part of a ceremony where the visitor is served alcohol at a gathering attended by the important elders of the community. You’ll see this tradition in various other parts of Bhutan, but believe me, it’s different here in Merak! You first drink three cups representing Gizhab (Respect) Thuenlam (Harmony) and Tsedung (Trust). Refusing any one of the first three cups would be tantamount to an insult. Much colorful singing and dancing ensues in the wake of the three cups of wine as the women keep pouring more alcohol. What happens if you refuse the subsequent pours? Well, then the ladies come and pinch your thighs and run away giggling! In the past, they say, women have even sat on the guests, often to the delight of the male visitors! Despite my initial shock when the serving women held down my cup and literally forced the alcohol on me, I found it all very refreshing. It reminded me how Bhutanese women truly can be uninhibited, funny, and comfortable in their skins. As the night wore on, I grew as red as a tomato, my urbane inability to handle the alcohol an enormous source of amusement to my hosts. “Madam zhey le reb mala mai ” (I see that madam can’t drink all that much) teased Ama Ngaden, my host. The hair on my back rose when she added casually that what I’d witnessed was merely a tamer version of the ceremony they actually inflicted on most other guests. “We don’t care whether you’re a Dasho or a King, we’ll come and sit on you!” she said, laughing. The first of many pours at the welcome drinking ceremony. © Pema Wangchuk PS: It’s good form to bring some token gifts of cash or kind to tip the servers and hosts after the wine-drinking ceremony. Highlight: Watching the fascinating story of the Brokpa people unfold before me on those incredible temple walls. Disappointment: Jomo Doksa also has an ancient statue of Ama Jomo that’s protected under dense folds of silk khadhar scarves. When I asked to see it, Caretaker Chhunku said, somewhat cryptically: “We don’t allow women [to see the statue],” and they ushered me out as my male team members prepared to catch a glimpse. Inside scoop: the two large trees outside the temple are said to be imbued by the spirits of Ama Jomo and Lam Jaropa. The ancient Jomo Doksa Temple with the two large trees outside that are believed to be embodiments of the community's founding male and female elders. © Pema Wangchuk To receive similar updates in your inbox, please subscribe to our newsletter Email* Yes, subscribe me to your newsletter. We take a detailed tour of the Time Magazine-featured Wangduechhoeling Palace (March 2025 issue), the former royal residence built in 1857 by the Trongsa Penlop, Jigme Namgyel, father of Bhutan’s first king. It was the first palace in Bhutan not designed as a fortress and today is poised to become a world-class museum where rooms are preserved with royal artifacts, cultural treasures, photographs, personal belongings, and interactive multimedia that bring the early monarchy and Bhutanese folkways to life. From Jakar Valley we trek (or drive) to Tang to visit the Ogyen Choling Museum where we enjoy the hospitality of Ashi Kunzang Roder and her Swiss Forester husband, Walter Roder at their beautiful old restored traditional Bhutanese 'castle'. Return to Jakar town for a visit to the Red Panda Brewery. We taste the locally brewed beer and enjoy Swiss-style cheese made in the valley. If his health and schedule permits we meet Fritz Maurer , the Swiss pioneer who introduced cheese making to Bumthang and later founded the brewery. Over a glass of his craft beer and his famous signature charcuterie plate, we will listen to his stories of Swiss-Bhutanese friendship and the modern evolution of Bhutan. It is a relaxed and memorable way to close our time walking in the footsteps of Bhutan’s oldest royal friends and wellwishers, “Apa” Fritz and Monica von Schulthess. The Bhutanese word Apa, which means "Father," was used by the Third King of Bhutan to describe his endearing and affectionate relationship with Fritz von Schulthess‑Rechberg , dear friend and benefactor of Bhutan, along with his multi-generational family members who continue the work of friendship that still shapes wonderfully progressive initiatives in the kingdom. On the final evening in Bumthang, raise a glass at a farewell dinner with Fritz Maurer at the historic Swiss Guest House — an institution blending Swiss alpine flavors with Bhutanese warmth. WHAT TRAVELERS ARE SAYING “Karma and his team perfectly orchestrated a wonderful series of valuable insights into Bhutan and Bhutanese culture. My particular area of interest was to learn about Bhutan’s challenge of balancing the goals of their Gross National Happiness Policy with the need to grow their economy and promote industry in the kingdom, which Karma addressed by arranging fascinating meetings with Bhutan’s Economic Affairs Ministers and other Bhutanese dignitaries and media personalities. A fantastic trip all-around with great hiking, culture, current affairs, insights into Buddhism and everything in-between.” ~ Heinrich Karl Friedrich Eduard Pierer von Esch, ex CEO, Siemens AG-Germany (front, third from left) REQUEST ITINERARY ACCOMMODATIONS High-end traditional lodges & our Expedition Camps included; Luxury Lodges at additional cost per night GROUP SIZE Private DURATION 16 days ACTIVITY LEVEL Easy to Moderate RESERVE TRIP Or call 1-855-4-BHUTAN (248826) TRIP TYPE Hiking, Culture & Festival ASK A QUESTION _________ Travel Logistics Organizer for CBS 60 Minutes 2024 special report on Bhutan “First, thank you for making my trip to Bhutan run smoothly. Mute Explosions If you’re considering travel in the spring Bhutan’s wild rhododendrons are the thing to see. Each year from March to May they arrive and flower, setting off mute explosions of scarlet, cream, gold and white ruffles across the slopes of the mighty Himalayas. Many-colored Blooms Bhutan’s rhododendrons are myriad, manifesting in all manner of hues and shades and ranging from dense shrubs to trees over 65 feet tall! Some of these ancient trees in the Himalayas are the progenitors of what later became cultivated and celebrated in polite botanical gardens across England, Europe and the West. To read a fascinating account of how these natives of the Himalayas were bred, cultivated and “civilized” (my words, not the author’s), read Tales of the Rose Tree: Ravishing Rhododendrons and Their Travels Around the World by Jane Brown (320 pages; HarperPerennial, 2005). Please see our annual itinerary Bhutan in the Time of Rhododendrons . READ CAPTION 3. In the Wild Part of the appeal of seeing rhododendrons in Bhutan may lie in the fact that, in their native Himalayan forests, the garden varieties of rhododendron that most people have come to know recede from the mind, making way for the magnificently effusive blooms that have made the Himalayas famous among enthusiasts. One such was the early 20th century naturalist Frank Kingdon Ward, who likened the native blooming rhododendrons he saw in the region to “fiery curtains,” “incandescent lava,” and “sea-tarnished metal” (Riddle of the Tsangpo Gorges: Retracing the Epic Journey of 1924-25 in South-East Tibet ; edited by Kenneth Cox, Antique Collectors Club Ltd., August 2001). Unfettered from the limits of human aesthetic conceptions, the wild rhododendrons of Bhutan have a primal grandeur that makes stumbling across a particularly well-endowed grove along the kingdom’s many forested trails, treks and roadsides an awe-inspiring experience. Perhaps it’s not surprising that they are celebrated all over Bhutan in song, given as lover’s gifts, and form the backdrop of many a family portrait taken in the spring. Memories When I was a boy my father would often make us put on our best clothes at the beginning of the flowering season. He’d then drive the family in an open jeep on the winding road into the mountains above the capital, Thimphu. Pulling off to a small curve of compacted dirt with a view of the glittering Himalayan peaks, he would bundle us out in our shining ghos and kiras . My mother, my sisters and I would then be herded up the forested trail to find the sheltering arches of an ancient rhododendron tree. Making sure there was good lighting my father would set up his old Kodak on a tripod until the entire frame was filled with the brilliance of our best brocades and silks clashing with the wild trumpets and blooms of the sumptuous tree. Setting the timer on the camera he’d jog over to join us in the frame, put his hand on hips, set his hat jauntily, and toss a black-and-white polka-dot scarf around his neck for good measure. Crazy About Rhododendrons For a time, I thought it was only my family that suffered from this temporary insanity caused by the annual return of the rhododendrons. However, reading the Jane Brown book, I realize there is a long tradition of becoming more than a little colored by one’s passion for rhododendrons. In fact, in one of the book’s passages, she quotes a Chinese poet, Cheng Yanxlong, who compares the red flowers of the rhododendron to—paraphrasing—blood dropped from the mouths of cuckoo birds . A very influential work in spreading the popularity of rhododendrons worldwide was Joseph Hooker’s Rhododendrons of the Sikkim-Himalaya . Published in 1849, it ushered the 19th century craze among gardeners, botanists, collectors and society aesthetes in England and the United States. A flurry of artists—including Victorian adventurer Marianne North (1830-1890)—began painting the flowers in a florid and gushing style matching the superlative-leaning manner in which they were being written about in the books and journals of the time. The Man and the Flower In her book, Jane Brown credits Swedish naturalist Carl von Linné (1707 ~ 78) for taking the Greek words for Rose, Rhodon, and Tree, Dendron, to come up with the binomial Rhododendron. And although the man himself died in poverty, Tales of the Rose Tree describes how the flower he named went on to a glamorous future celebrated in the great gardens of the world and once, even, cultivated by no less a personage than George Washington, first President of the United States. Celebrating Rhododendrons Of the many varieties of rhododendron, 46 known species have been found in Bhutan, with 10 additional subspecies recorded. An annual three-day Rhododendron Festival in the mountains above capital, Thimphu, celebrates their variety, beauty and abundance, and delves into aspects of their use in traditional medicine and crafts, among others. But the best way to experience the flowers is to see them in the wild on our guided day hikes and country walks (see our Bhutan in the Time of Rhododendrons itinerary). An Archer's Call Perhaps to recall the intense exuberance of the rhododendrons’ arrival in the spring, a Bhutanese archer pulling his bow traditionally cries: Ethometho sha rendo Ngi da kari pho rendo! It’s time for rhododendrons to bloom And it’s time for my arrows to find their mark! Indeed, truth be told, even to those of us who were subjected to endless rounds of picture-taking amid the incandescently blooming trees, nothing says welcome to Bhutan better than a wild tumble of luscious rhododendron blooms! Further Notes: Other interesting botanical species that you may encounter in Bhutan in the spring include spruce, tiny gentians, pedicularis (broomrape), and, higher up, snow lotus or saussurea , a rare medicinal plant. Visiting Bhutan in the spring provides the perfect opportunity for discovering unique flora found nowhere else in the world. A great naturalist’s resource, if you are traveling in Bhutan at this time, is A Photo Guide to Flowers of Bhutan by our friend Thinley Namgyel, and Karma Tenzin, published by WWF Bhutan, 2009. Questions? Get in touch with us Through the eyes of a select few informed leaders we saw the dilemmas of a culture: A hitherto sheltered nation discovering the arguments for and against remaining a cloistered society in this 21st Century. I loved the adventure, and I loved the discovery. Unlike anything else I have ever experienced! Lola W., California Get similar features & travel information straight to your inbox with the Bhutan Himalaya Newsletter IN THE SMALL market of Shaba, a few miles shy of Bhutan’s only international airport, we hit a rocky dirt road leading to a narrow fold between overlapping mountains. Ramshackle shops in cheerful Bhutanese colors lean on either side of the bumpy road, followed by local homes and farms, and a small community school. Soon, the road disappears behind the broad, sumo bulk of one of the mountains seen from the road. At the bend, there’s a small sign in Dzongkha, the national script of Bhutan. “This is the mythic site of a hidden lake,” it says on the sign, followed by the cryptic words: “Sometimes a black snake is seen here; take that as a bad omen.” Thankfully, there’s no sign of the lake or the ill-omen snake. Such articles of mystic faith populate the Bhutanese landscape where striking natural features are seen as portals to other unseen realms. And none more so than this tucked away corner of Paro which is sometimes described by Bhutanese elders as a Bae-yul , one of the many secret paradises hidden across the Himalayas. It’s easy to see how the idea got started. The massive bulk of the mountain in front of us blocks the interiors of what we’re about to see. We turn the corner, and the revelation is dramatic. A secret village, awash in the golden winter sun, hidden from the rest of the well-traveled Paro Valley below, blooms in front of us. Like James Hilton’s Shangrila come to life, the famous lamasery of Euthok Goemba sits atop the opposite hill like an ornate gemstone on a wedding ring. The rocky road winds upward, bouncing us past local farmhouses and dry rice terraces etched into the hillside in this stubbly winter season. Soon, we come up on the monastery-style building that’s the first all-inclusive wellness center based on Bhutanese healing traditions. The entry past a small grove of pine trees feels less like arriving at a hotel, and more like stepping into another world. Bishal, from guest services — sporting a smart, striped Bhutanese gho — is waiting at the entrance with traditional silk khadhars, the soft folds of the scarves falling over our necks like a gentle benediction. He leads us through the striking crimson wooden doors—with elaborately carved brass knockers—that open to a classic stone courtyard surrounded by prayer wheels you can turn for spiritual merit. He guides us past the small bridge to another set of doors next to a small plaque announcing the lodge’s membership in the coveted SLH “Small Luxury Hotels” group. “This threshold marks our passage to an intermediate transformation space, the kind found in Bhutanese monasteries,“ Bishal says, as he invites us to light votive butterlamps. “We leave the ordinary world behind to enter a sacred space.” It’s all a bit self-serious, but as the radiant golden doors open, and the breathtaking panorama of Neyphu Valley reveals itself in its luminous splendor, I find myself taken in. Inside, Tracy, the pastry chef and acting lodge manager, greets us and provides a warm introduction, followed by Govind, from the front desk, who guides us and settles us in. There’s no formal check-in; instead, you’re greeted with a small shot of medicine tea from local herbs and minerals concocted by the resident Menpa , or physician. Then we’re invited to relax by a vast picture window that opens to clouds drifting languidly across the Paro Valley and the sloping roofs of the picturesque Euthok monastery. After check-in is over — a simple matter of signing in with your email and picking out your house made herbal soap — we’re led downstairs to the wellness center. A traditional Bhutanese doctor — a graduate of the National Institute of Traditional Medicine (NITM) — joins us for the complimentary consultation. Dr. Dochen says traditional Bhutanese medicine focuses on balancing the body’s internal energy, similar in some ways to Chinese traditional medicine. Health is understood as a harmonious flow of subtle energy through about 70,000 channels, summarized into three main ones: a central channel from the base of the spine to the crown of the head, and right and left channels that meet at the center of the chest at key energy centers or chakras, such as the heart and sacral chakras. “When these channels are blocked or the energy becomes excessive, deficient, or disturbed, it leads to physical and mental symptoms that can eventually develop into disease,” Dr. Dochen says. “Treatment follows a stepwise direction: first adjusting diet and lifestyle, then, if needed, prescribing compound herbal medicines in forms like pills or powders, and finally, if these don’t help, using external therapies such as massage, compresses, moxibustion, cupping, and bloodletting.” Dr. Dochen’s calm voice and thoughtful gaze makes the exchange feel restorative. He takes my pulse, asks about sleep, digestion, energy — listening not only to what I say, but to what lies quietly unspoken. It’s a fitting introduction to a sanctuary built around balance, introspection, and Bhutan’s therapeutic traditions. Later, as dusk falls, the valley below turns liquid gold before melting into a deep, enveloping blue. Through tall windows, the last light fades, leaving us with an exquisite sense of stillness. Dinner unfolds slowly, almost ceremonially — garden herbs, an amuse bouche of crispy flatbread on a bed of yogurt, a light and delicately flavored wild mushroom consommé, roasted chicken strips atop a colorful vegetable stew, and, for dessert, a small cup of dark chocolate mousse, with the cup made wholly from chocolate. We enjoy our repast with Louk Lennaerts, the Dutch founder of the lodge, who regales us with tales of his wide and varied experiences across the hospitality industry. Lennaerts first visited Bhutan in 2013, initially seeing it as a somewhat mysterious, little‑known destination, but was deeply moved by the country’s tranquillity and spiritual atmosphere. That visit inspired the idea of building a sanctuary dedicated to inner balance and wellbeing, rather than a typical sightseeing hotel, leading him to acquire hillside land in Neyphu Valley with sweeping monastery and mountain views. “This is not a hotel, this is not a resort,” Lennaerts says. “The name says it all. It’s a sanctuary. The luxury is not the luxury of materialism but the luxury of time, of connecting deeply within. These days that’s the deepest luxury of all!” Back in our room, high ceilings, warm timber floors, handwoven textiles, and gentle lighting create a space that feels more like a mountain retreat than a hotel suite. The bed faces the valley, with every one of the 24 rooms looking out on to the storybook Euthok monastery. The silence is almost tangible — broken only by the faint rustle of prayer flags stirring outside our window. Morning brings a dreamlike vision outside our tall windows. The valley with long ropes of mist, pierced by slivers of light as the sun edges over the eastern horizon. Wrapped in a robe, tea in hand, my better half stands at the window to watch the day awaken. Later, she goes downstairs for a yoga session that unfolds in a sunlit studio overlooking the valley views. The heated indoor pool features panoramic floor-to-ceiling glass windows framing an ocean of clouds. Time feels briefly irrelevant. By midday, the world below reappears, reality drawing us back to our commitments. Yet something lingers — a quiet recalibration, a sense of inner spaciousness. As we drive back down the hillside, the Bhutan Spirit Sanctuary recedes into the afternoon, and soon is hidden behind the final bend, shrouded back in its dreamlike mystery, a hidden gem in a hidden land. *** To receive similar updates in your inbox, please subscribe to our newsletter Email* Yes, subscribe me to your newsletter. VIEW DAY BY DAY MARCH 09: BANGKOK / PARO / PUNAKHA Your early morning flight from Bangkok on Drukair KB 153 departs at 6 AM and arrives in Paro at 8:15 AM; after quick refreshments and Bhutanese grown and brewed organic coffee at the Mountain Café, we drive 1.5 hours to Dochula pass with spectacular views of the Himalayas in fair weather. Continue two more hours along looping scenic mountain roads to descend to the farming community of Lobeysa, where we visit Chimmi Lhakhang, the fascinating fertility temple of the ‘Divine Madman,’ celebrating the legend of the colorful prankster saint Drukpa Kunley. Continue driving upriver along the banks of the serenely flowing Mochu River until we cross a suspension bridge strewn with prayer flags and arrive at the spectacular Pemako, a lodge that was inspired by the ancient Himalayan legend of a perfect hidden land. MARCH 10: PUNAKHA FESTIVAL Get festive with the local people of Punakha and join them at their biggest religious mask dance festival of the year, the Punakha Tshechu, and take in the spectacular performances and the colorful sights and sounds and scenes that are a photographer’s delight. In the afternoon, we walk a section of the Trans Bhutan Trail to cross the longest suspension bridge In Bhutan, and take a short walk on the opposite side of the valley before returning to the lodge for some rest and relaxation. MARCH 11: FESTIVAL / POTOLO ART CAMP / YOUNG MONKS Today we rise early and return to the Punakha Dzong to witness the annual showing of the giant Thongdroel, a religious embroidered appliqué brocade scroll that takes scores of monks to unfurl down a tower that’s at least four stories high. In the afternoon, we take the drive upriver to meet the young monks of Chorten Nyingbo, an ancient monastery, and stop by the nearby hilltop outdoor art camp of our dear friend Asha Kama, a nationally celebrated artist whose gentle, sparkling demeanor belies the fact that many consider him a national treasure. In the evening, we return to the lodge in time to rest for our drive to Gangtey in the morning. MARCH 12: DRIVE TO GANGTEY / CRANES / HIKE This morning, after breakfast, we drive three hours to Gangtey Valley and check in at one of the valley’s newest tented (safari style) camps for a different experience. Visit the crane center, learn about local conservation efforts to protect the endangered cranes and, later, hike the scenic nature trail where we may see the last remaining Black-necked Cranes taking flight or roosting in the valley before their seasonal return back to the high plateau of Tibet. MARCH 13: DRIVE TO BUMTHANG / WANGDUECHHOELING PALACE GOLDEN HOUR TOUR This morning after breakfast we take the five-hour drive to Bumthang. We stop at the Chumey weaving co-op to admire the local handicrafts and vibrant wool and yak-hair weavings which originated in the region. Afterwards we take the “pilgrim‘s walk,“ visiting temples and monasteries from the seventh to the 17th centuries. We take a lovely picnic lunch beside the river, before crossing the modern steel-span bridge to the other side of the valley to continue our walk and visit the Tamshing Monastery where the faded mud walls with ancient paintings leaves one with a deep sense of taking a step back in time. The end of the walk brings us to a beloved local brewery, the Red Panda, where we stop to try local handmade tasties, fermented Red Panda beer (if dietary restrictions allow), fresh local apple cider and apple juice, Himalayan (wheat) dumplings, or locally grown potato, and local Emmemthaler Swiss cheese made on site at the next door dairy collective. MARCH 15: CHAMKHAR RIVER COUNTRY WALK Today we have all day to take a leisurely country ramble through the scenic villages upriver on both sides of the aquamarine Chamkhar River. We stop at local heritage sites like Thangbi and Ngang Lhakhang, or the ‘Swan Temple,’ with a picnic lunch or meal at the ancient monastery. Return to the lodge in Jakar after a tour of the sacred images inside the temple, and after learning about the monastery’s interesting origins. MARCH 16: TANG VALLEY / VILLAGE TREK / OGYEN CHOLING MUSEUM Today, take the leisurely two-hour drive from Jakar to Ogyen Choling bridge, and hike uphill through frozen-in-time villages to the Ogyen Choling Manor and Museum, featured in Dwell magazine, and the New York Times. We take a tour the museum and enjoy delicious meals prepared on site using organic ingredients grown on the property’s gardens lovingly tended by the hosts, the noble lady Ashi Kunzang, and her Swiss husband, the (retired) forestry advisor Walter Roder. Both are a wealth of local information and lore. The lodge also provides the incredible opportunity to discover and meditate in the manor’s exquisite Tara Temple, dedicated to the Goddess of Compassion. MARCH 17: VILLAGE TREK TO JAKAR / BUDDHIST BLESSINGS After a lovely, sumptuous breakfast with our gracious hosts, we continue the drive to the Tang Pemacholing Nunnery to meet with the inspiring resident nuns before walking along a pine forested trail to the high pass over Jakar, followed by a descent into the valley with spectacular views of the valley on both sides as we descend into Jakar. MARCH 18: FLIGHT TO PARO / THIMPHU / CAPITAL SIGHTS Your day begins with a short but dramatic early morning flight past snowy Himalayan peaks, the deeply forested valleys and gorges of Bhutan cut through with glacial rivers running down from the high mountains. Drukair KB013 departs Bumthang 6:30 AM and arrives in Paro at 7:05 AM, following which we drive 1.5 hours to Thimphu to check in at your secluded lodge hidden among pine trees above the capital. A morning visit to the Bhutan Foundation offices, to meet country director Norbu Dema to learn about the foundation’s wide ranging activities to support Gross National Happiness and socially progressive programs in Bhutan kicks off another full day of exploration. Stop by the city’s markets, art galleries, shops, the textile museum, and the school of traditional arts and crafts. WHAT TO EXPECT The activities on this trip are rated as moderate and suits a wide range of interests and physical fitness levels. The hikes on this trip can range from moderate to challenging, depending on your abilities. Trip members should be in good health and comfortable standing or walking for extended periods of time and confident navigating mixed and steep terrain that may include rocky trails, slippery conditions and, or, steps and stairs. Daily activities include city walking tours, hiking to and entering monasteries, temples and fortresses, driving over winding mountain roads and easy to moderate hiking with some strenuous options where possible. The general elevations in the valleys will mostly range from 6,800 ft to 9,000 ft, with drives that will take us over higher passes before descending to the average elevations mentioned above. The final hike to Tiger's Nest Monastery is 10,000 ft. ACCOMMODATIONS The high-end accommodations on this journey feature traditional Bhutanese style with modern elements. The lodges are handpicked for regional character, comfort, and hospitality, including our beautiful family lodge in the central highlands of Bhutan, the Mountain Resort (see more on the Mountain Resort below). In peak season, depending on availability, we may use lodges comparable to the ones we have listed or advertised. EXPEDITION STAFF Every expedition is curated by expert native-born guides and trip leaders who also facilitate meetings and learning experiences with other locally knowledgeable people along the way. Our experienced team shares valuable insights and local expertise to ensure a culturally rich adventure of discovery through the Himalayan landscape and traditions of Bhutan. ABOUT CULTURAL EXPEDITIONS Our cultural expeditions are bespoke itineraries designed for active travelers that combine guided excursions, cultural insights, art and customs, with distinguished accommodations featuring a traditional ambience. Our journeys are small group adventures of usually 8 to 12 travelers, with a maximum of 16 guests per group. Unlike most tour providers who think nothing of a single guide leading an entire busload of travelers, we maintain a maximum of 4 guests per Bhutan Himalaya Expeditions guide, not counting support staff. This ensures that our journeys feel more like a shared adventure with local friends than a tourist's jaunt through the countryside. GETTING THERE Fly from your home city to Bangkok, Singapore, New Delhi Kolkata, or Kathmandu (Main Gateway Cities)* Overnight Fly from Gateway City to Paro, Bhutan. IMPORTANT: Bhutan Himalaya Expeditions makes round-trip flight arrangements from the Gateway City of your choice to Bhutan as a courtesy to our travelers. Airfare is not included in trip price. For further details please email us contact us using the Reserve Online button on this page. *Bangkok is the primary Gateway City and offers the most frequent and most reliable flights to Bhutan. OUR TRAVEL EXTENSIONS (with optional Bangkok Transit arrangements) If you're thinking of traveling to some of the other interesting destinations in the region before or after Bhutan you may like to consider our travel extensions. That way you can spend less time juggling and coordinating multiple bookings and more time experiencing the magnificent World Heritage site of Angkor Wat, a peaceful Laotian sojourn, discovering Vietnam or experiencing India. For further details, and to see past travel extensions, please visit our Regional Extensions page. WHAT TRAVELERS ARE SAYING “Through the eyes of a select few informed leaders, we saw the dilemmas of a culture: A hitherto sheltered nation discovering the arguments for and against remaining a cloistered society in this 21st Century. I loved the adventure, and I loved the discovery. Unlike anything else I have ever experienced!” ~ Lola W., California (U.S.) REQUEST ITINERARY ACCOMMODATIONS Luxury & Heritage Lodges PRIVATE DURATION 13 days ACTIVITY LEVEL Easy to Moderate RESERVE TRIP Or call 1-855-4-BHUTAN (248826) TRIP TYPE ACTIVE ● CULTURE ASK A QUESTION _________ Travel Logistics Organizer for CBS 60 Minutes 2024 special report on Bhutan “First, thank you for making my trip to Bhutan run smoothly.
