Attend a colorful mask dance festival in the 'Valley of the Queens'
THIS EARLY SPRING JOURNEY, timed when Bhutan's wild rhododendrons first begin to show, carries us deep into the country's living traditions. We begin in Thimphu, the capital, before crossing 10,000-foot Dochula Pass into the Punakha valley to join the ancient, little-seen mask dance festival of Talo — birthplace of the four queens of Bhutan, and the site of one of the kingdom's most cherished springtime celebrations. From there we continue east over Pele La into the glacial Gangtey valley and onward to Bumthang, spiritual heartland of the Bhutanese kings, before flying west to Paro for a dawn ascent to the clifftop Tiger's Nest monastery.
Along the way we walk stretches of the historic Trans Bhutan Trail, visit temples and dzongs spanning the 7th to the 17th centuries, share meals in family homes and ancestral manors, and meet the weavers, artisans, farmers, and monks who keep Bhutan's traditions alive. Our route — Thimphu, Punakha, Gangtey, Bumthang, and back to Paro — offers a rare, unhurried portrait of the kingdom, blending active hiking, cultural immersion, and genuine hospitality before your return flight home from Paro.
HEALTH & SAFETY
HEALTH & SAFETY
We are following strict national and international safety guidelines and protocols (Royal Government of Bhutan, WHO, and CDC (US) recommendations) to keep you, our staff, and the Bhutanese people safe. This includes new measures for maintaining personal health and hygiene, social distancing best practices, face covering requirements, cleaning, handwashing and more.
UPDATED BOOKING & CANCELLATION POLICY
With global travel resuming, we have changed our booking and cancellation policies back to normal. Normal cancellation policies are now in effect and final trip payment is due (4 months/120 days before trip start date, whichever is earlier). Trip cancellation policies are outlined in our trip confirmation emails and available by request.
ITINERARY
*Note: All hikes described on the day-to-day itinerary below are optional and alternate options, such as visits to local markets, museums, villages, temples, monasteries and local experiences will be arranged with Bhutan Himalaya Expedition's Bhutanese Trip Leaders and staff on hand to guide and curate those experiences for non-hikers or guests who decide not to hike on a day-to-day basis.
VIEW DAY BY DAY
DAY 1 · MARCH 14, 2027 — BANGKOK TO THIMPHU

Your early-morning flight Drukair KB 153 departs Bangkok at 5:30 am and touches down in Bhutan at 07:45 am, a flight duration of 3 hours 15 minutes.
Your Bhutan Himalaya Expeditions team will meet you at the airport and lead your journey from beginning to end. Our senior trip leader, or leaders, greet you at the exit to the airport arrivals building, and take you for restorative coffee and refreshments to the Mountain Café outside Paro International Airport. From there, it's a scenic 1.5-hour drive beside the Paro Chhu, a deep river valley, and the Wangchhu River Valley, on the north-south highway into Thimphu, Bhutan's bustling hillside capital. Check in at The Capital Hotel, right in the heart of downtown, then set out on foot to explore the city — its markets, prayer wheels, and archery grounds — with lunch at one of our favorite local restaurants. We reconvene in the evening for a welcome dinner together as a group.
Meals included: Lunch, Dinner
Accommodations: The Capital Hotel or comparable

DAY 2 · MARCH 15 — THIMPHU'S SACRED HILLSIDES
This morning we climb on foot through pine forest trails laced with budding rhododendron, up to the towering Buddha Dordenma, whose golden pavilion offers sweeping views over the Thimphu valley and the mountains beyond. After lunch at a favorite local spot, we visit local artisans, including the Royal Bootmaker — keeper of a centuries-old craft — and the Royal Textile Academy, Bhutan's living archive of its rich and storied weaving traditions.
Meals included: Lunch, Dinner
Accommodations: The Capital Hotel or comparable

DAY 3 · MARCH 16 — DOCHULA PASS TO THE PUNAKHA VALLEY
We drive an hour up into the mountains to Dochula Pass, its 108 white chortens forming an island of Buddhist calm dividing the national East-West highway. While most visitors circle the stupas three times and continue on, we take an uphill trek through an old-growth rhododendron forest to a hilltop shrine — a vigorous climb rewarded with 360-degree Himalayan views. Returning to the pass in time for lunch, we descend into the Punakha valley, stopping along the way to visit the serene Sangchen Choling Nunnery and the colorful Chimi Lhakhang, the Temple of the Divine Madman, set amid golden rice fields. We settle in for the night at our lodge in the valley.
Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Accommodations: The Zhingkham Resort, Dhumra Farmstay or comparable

DAY 4 · MARCH 17 — THE TALO FESTIVAL MASK DANCES
This morning we join local festivalgoers in the village of Talo for its ancient and vibrant mask dances — the same dances, performed in the same costumes, that have moved this community for centuries. Talo holds a special place in Bhutanese history as the ancestral home of the four queens of Bhutan, and its early springtime festival remains one of the kingdom's most cherished, least-touristed celebrations — a rare window into the living spiritual culture of western Bhutan.
Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Accommodations: The Zhingkham Resort, Dhumra Farmstay or comparable

DAY 5 · MARCH 18 — AN ARTIST'S STUDIO AND A HIDDEN LAKE
This morning we drive deep into forested hills to the hilltop village of Potolo, ancestral home to the celebrated Bhutanese artist Asha Kama Wangdi and his open-air studio. On the way, we sponsor and share a simple breakfast with the monks of nearby Chorten Nyingbo Monastery before spending the morning in our friend's charming homespun gallery, hearing about his many ongoing projects and his vision for artistic expression in Bhutan. In the afternoon, we hike up to a lake hidden deep in the forest, its shores alive with butterflies, before returning to the lodge.
Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Accommodations: The Zhingkham Resort, Dhumra Farmstay or comparable

DAY 6 · MARCH 19 — OVER PELE LA TO THE GANGTEY VALLEY
After breakfast we drive 2.5 hours to Pele La pass, from where we follow a forest track through fir and rhododendron to a high point that opens onto a spectacular ridgeline descent into the Gangtey (Phobjikha) valley — one of the most beautiful ways to enter this glacial valley on foot. Our hike ends on the valley floor, where your Bhutan Himalaya Expeditions vehicle meets us for the short ride to the lodge. This evening, unwind with a traditional Bhutanese hot stone bath.
Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Accommodations: The Dewachen Lodge, Gangtey Tent Resort or comparable

DAY 7 · MARCH 20 — ONWARD TO THE BUMTHANG VALLEY
Today's 4.5-hour drive east carries us deeper into central Bhutan, with a lunch stop at a restaurant perched beside a cascading waterfall. In the late afternoon, before arriving in Bumthang, we stop in Chumey at a weaving cooperative to admire yathra, the distinctive yak-hair-and-wool textiles woven only in this style, unique to central Bhutan.
Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Accommodations: The Mountain Resort or comparable

DAY 8 · MARCH 21 — THE BUMTHANG PILGRIM'S WALK
This morning we set out on foot along the valley's traditional pilgrim's circuit, stopping at temples dating from the 7th to the 17th centuries and admiring ancient murals inside atmospheric halls where time seems to have stood still. We take lunch today at the home of a prominent local farmer and government official, sampling the seasonal, scratch-made delicacies of central Bhutan. We end the day at the cozy Red Panda Brewery café, sampling local fermented beer artisan made by the valley’s celebrated Swiss-Bhutanese family, alongside fresh handmade Swiss cheese, crackers, and fresh stroopwafel or fresh buckwheat pancake popular in the region. Back at the lodge, unwind with a massage or a rooftop hot stone bath (let your Bhutan Himalaya staff know so they can schedule this activity in advance—not included in trip price).
Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Accommodations: The Mountain Resort or comparable

DAY 9 · MARCH 22 — TRANS BHUTAN TRAIL TO THE TANG VALLEY
This morning, after breakfast, we set off on foot along a historic stretch of the Trans Bhutan Trail into the Tang valley. Descending from the pass, we're met by vehicle for the drive up to Ogyen Choling Manor, an ancestral estate and museum run by descendants of the historic Ogyen Choling family. We enjoy a delicious lunch of locally grown, organic ingredients prepared in the kitchen and personally overseen by Ashi Kunzang Choden Roder, a celebrated Bhutanese author, and her husband. We return to the lodge in time for a group dinner.
Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Accommodations: The Mountain Resort or comparable

DAY 10 · MARCH 23 — FLIGHT TO PARO, DZONG AND MUSEUM
We take the early Drukair flight KB011, departing Bumthang at 7:30am and arriving in Paro at 8:05am. Transfer to The Olathang Cottages and, after breakfast, head into Paro town to explore the weekend market, visit Paro Dzong, and tour the National Museum, housed in an old watchtower fortress on the hill above. Back at the lodge, try your hand at traditional Bhutanese archery with handmade bamboo bows, or a game of khuru, Bhutan's beloved lawn-dart game.
Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Accommodations: The Olathang Cottages or comparable

DAY 11 · MARCH 24 — TIGER'S NEST MONASTERY
We set out in the early hours of the morning for the spectacular climb to Taktsang, the clifftop Tiger's Nest monastery — arguably the most sacred site in all of Bhutan — arriving before the crowds descend. Back in Paro by afternoon, we have free time to explore the market, local shops, and galleries before gathering for a farewell dinner together as a group.
Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Accommodations: The Olathang Cottages or comparable

DAY 12 · MARCH 25 — DEPARTURE
After breakfast, we transfer you to Paro International Airport in time for your return flight to Bangkok. Your flight Drukair KB140 departs Paro at 11:50 am and arrives in Bangkok (via Guwahati, India) at 05:25 pm, a flight duration of 4 hours, 35 minutes.
Meals included: Breakfast

ABOUT CULTURAL EXPEDITIONS

Our cultural expeditions are bespoke itineraries designed for active travelers that combine guided excursions, cultural insights, art and customs, with distinguished accommodations featuring a traditional ambience. Our journeys are small group adventures of usually 8 to 12 travelers, with a maximum of 16 guests per group. Unlike most tour providers who think nothing of a single guide leading an entire busload of travelers, we maintain a maximum of 4 guests per Bhutan Himalaya Expeditions guide, not counting support staff. This ensures that our journeys feel more like a shared adventure with local friends than a tourist's jaunt through the countryside.

WHAT TRAVELERS ARE SAYING

“Through the eyes of a select few informed leaders, we saw the dilemmas of a culture: A hitherto sheltered nation discovering the arguments for and against remaining a cloistered society in this 21st Century. I loved the adventure, and I loved the discovery. Unlike anything else I have ever experienced!”
